I searched before posting this (which doesn't mean that I didn't miss it). Update manager is throwing the following error message:
Please insert the disk labeled:
Ubuntu 11.10 _Oneiric Ocelot_ - Release i386 (20111012)
in drive /cdrom/
Followed by:
W: Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.10 _Oneiric Ocelot_ - Release i386 (20111012)]/pool/main/f/fakeroot/fakeroot_1.17-1_i386.deb
I assume this is a temporary error that will be fixed at some point down the road. If not, does anyone have a suggestion for a work-around (other than ignoring the update)?

Using the menus "System > Administration > Update Manager" open the update manager. On the bottom of the window that opens, click the "Settings" button. On the "Ubuntu Software" tab, remove the check in the check box for "Installable from CD-ROM/DVD".
Then try to update again.

Another thought...
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS should only be offering to upgrade to 10.10 and not 11.10. Have you edited the sources.list file manually? Have you tried to upgrade to 11.10 or tried to install 11.10 and failed? Do you have a CD/DVD of 11.10 in the CD/DVD drive?

Thanks for the suggestions. "Installable from CD-ROM/DVD" was not checked. I have not edited sources in ages and ages. However, last week I deviated from my normal procedure, and did a test install of 11.10 on an SDHC card without first removing the SSD on which 10.04 is installed. I have multiple recent image backups, and I think I will try a restore.

I'm glad to see someone that backs their stuff up.
:) see signature below. LOL.
A backup has saved my data numerous times.

Restoring from backup resolved the problem.
A long time ago, I read a book by Mike Gancarz, called "The Unix Philosopy," which had a sentence that the Atari OS and Unix:
The Atari approach suggests that if the average person is given a gun, he is likely to shoot himself in the foot. By contrast, the Unix system effectively hands the uninitiated user an assault rifle, plugs in 20 rounds, and points it at his foot. A person with his foot shot off doesn't walk away from the ride very easily.
It was a lesson well learned, reinforced by shooting myself in the foot a few times — usually when I attempted some "time saving" shortcut.

I see you have opened your own thread for this problem. That was what I was going to suggest.
