For 8.10 enlarging the screen (window) causes info to disappear

On a new install 8.10, for any application, enlarging the screen causes all the info to disappear.Making it smaller brings back the info. The screens are unstable and makes use of 8.10 very difficult.
In many cases the info is missing on starting the application because the starting screen is slightly large.
There is no error on checking memory.
Do you know of a way to fix this?

8.10 has not been supported for a long time. There are no security patches for it after April 2010, and you have to use the old-releases repository for it if you need to install some software. I would suggest downloading and installing 10.04 or newer. 10.04 is supported until April 2013.
