I'm using 11.10 with gnome-shell.
I've never used empathy before but I decided to give it a try since it's so well integrated with gnome-shell. However, despite having checked the "Enable notifications when contacts come online/offline" in its preferences, these notifications don't appear at all. Only notifications about new messages do.

Is this a bug? How do I enable it again? Having to switch to the contact list window every time I hear a log on/off sound in order to see who has come or gone is annoying...

GNOME Shell has its own telepathy client with notifications, so it filters out empathy notifications. The Shell client appears to have presence notifications, but I can't seem to get that to work either. The chat and call notifications work, though.
