An interesting article from The Economist shows that current vision-based CAPTCHAs are about to be cracked by automated bots (http://www.economist.com/node/21532396).
I used to administer a forum for a friend, and we tried all sorts of CAPTCHAs. In the end, the one that stopped automated bots cold was the type that Ubuntu Forums uses, i.e. a text-based question such as, "What is 1+1?" or even, "To help stop spambots, please type the word bat."
