I did a clean install of 11.10 using an iso dvd I created. No problems encountered. I also followed the instructions for adding Gnome Shell. After doing so I don'see any difference. I don't think that it is possible to delete Unity as with 11.04. What do I need to do to see Gnome work?

Also - it does not seem possible to get rid of the workplace switcher as I did on 11.04?? Ideas?

If you did

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

then in login window you should be able to select Gnome.

I got Gnome from the Ubuntu programs. After your response I deleted it the same way and then did the command you suggested. Restarted etc. Make no difference. There is no choice offered anywhere I can see on the login screen. It is true that with 11.04 there was such a choice.

Still????

That choice still exist on login screen on upper right corner of the box where you type your username & password.

Zvacet,

Thank you. I thought that mark was just trim.

Back with Gnome. I thought that Unity had improved since 11.04. I guess it is just too "busy" and Mac like for me..
