I just recently decided to come back to Linux but I can't find Emerald anywhere. The latest build I could find was from 20 weeks ago. Do people still use Emerald, or does it still work? If not, what are other people using now?

It seems Emerald is not maintained anymore and a substitute is under development. However, you can install the last compatible version from a ppa divulged by webupd8 (http://www.webupd8.org/2011/05/get-emerald-to-work-in-ubuntu-1104.html). It is for Ubuntu 11.04, but it also works on 11.10.

Instead of installing the ppa, download the deb from https://launchpad.net/~malteworld/+archive/compiz

Keep in mind it has some issues and shouldn't be very stable. So, use it at your own risk. That being said, I am running it without major problems for a few days.

Yes, emerald has stopped all development. Distributions would still keep it around, but has been getting more and more unstable and unreliable. I wouldn't use Emerald anymore.

I don't honestly have any problems with it on 11.04. 11.10 might be a different story, stability-wise.

Since Gnome 3 does anti-aliased window decorators, I wouldn't need or use it under 11.10, but some people still like transparency.
