Problem with installing ATI Driver in 11.10

Hi there
I have a problem for installing ATI driver
Now I can find ati/amd proprietary fglrx graphics driver (post-release updates but when I try to active it the program start to download something and after a while return this error


sorry,installation of this driver failed.

I am having the same problem, any clues? (I am also having trouble with my external monitor freezing intermittently but I am not sure if that is related to not being able to install the updates).

If you're presented with two versions, do NOT use the post-release version; use the other one.

Mark Phelps is rigth, DONT install post-realease version; now this helped me fix this (by Cynical)

I just dealt with this problem myself. Here is the easy fix for it.

in Ubuntu 11.10 unity 3D


Hit ALT+F2 in order to get to the terminal (ALT+F7 will take you back to the desktop)

1. Remove fglrx related packages

sudo apt-get purge fglrx*

2. Delete xorg.conf

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

3. Reinstall xorg components

sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-core libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64

4. Reconfigure Xorg
Code:


sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and finally

5. Reboot

sudo reboot
