Some packages - cannot be upgraded/updated af Oneiro 11.10!

Why can't I update/upgrade these two program/applications? There's no error - I just cannot select these two packages, to be upgraded...

Please help! I'm running the newest ubuntu 11.10 - Oneiro and I suspect this is a bug...

Thank you very much for posting the picture... I thought this was one of these forums where that couldn't be done :-)

It's impossible for me to add a tick in the check box next to the two lowest options (paraview and gmsh)! It simply refuses to make a check-mark even if I click on the empty box!

Also: The top option "Distribution updates", "works" in the sense that I can remove and add the tick-mark... But the "Install Updates" button is grayed out - it's impossible to click on it, no matter what I do.

That's why I suspect that this problem is caused by a bug... What do you think? Suggestions? I think it's a really annoying bug and I dunno what to do about it...

Its possibly due to dependencies on other packages ...

and plays it safe .....


If you really want to install it .... you can ..... but its all terminal and may mess up other things

sudo apt-get update

Not sure about the second package yet .......

paraview seems to have a few problems with dependencies ...... may be best to wait ......

Aaah, so not being able to mark the checkerbox, means that there's a conflict... Not very intuitive... Still seems like the update manager is a little unfinished to me and could be more helpful / improved by telling the user what is the problem...

Also: The top option "Distribution updates" - what does that mean? It "works" in the sense that I can remove and add the tick-mark... But the "Install Updates" button is grayed out - so why is it there?

Same type of problem here, except the offending app in updater is Evolution; cannot check the Evolution checkboxes in the software updater. Don't use Evolution so I wouldn't mind removing it but attempting to do so raises unresolved dependencies and a similar long list of packages to be removed / added to resolve it. Did not continue to try this.

I also am stuck at the previous version (4.0.10) of VirtualBox; I updated the package source via synaptic to

I have a similar problem. On amd64 system I just did a bunch of do-release-upgrade steps to move up from lucid.

Now when I run aptitude it immediately suggests 87 removals, very similar to the list you show above (including removing zlib1g)

I thought it's a multi-arch problem, but I cannot figure out why aptitude thinks it needs to remove everything.

I have re-install libc-bin, which should install 2.13-20ubuntu5, but under depends/multiarch-support for any of the packages to be removed, 2.13-20ubuntu5 is not shown as installed.

Update Manager now wants to install 115 updates, but it fails with a 404 not found for Google Chrome... I'm stuck at this point and I don't have the extra time to play around trying to find a fix for this screw up (not saying who or what screwed up of course). My patience is at an end.

I probably will run the repairs and let apt have its way this weekend. If all else fails its simple enough to wipe and reload the system from a bootable USB drive: all of my data files are on separate drives and fully backed up. This desktop originally was installed at, I don't remember how long ago, maybe 9.04, and it's probably time to start fresh anyway.

Seem to have fixed it by removing individually the main packages that were proposed for removal by aptitude. In my case, these were acroread, hdhomerun-gui, hplip-gui, mythtv-frontend, vlc, and language-support-translation-en. I checked the unresolved dependencies several times during the removals, which I ran individually. Once sufficient packages were removed, upgrading the system (now with 156 items) became possible. The upgrade went smoothly; I now have an up-to-date Oneiric desktop system.

The rest of the removals proposed by aptitude were not necessary, which is a good thing since among them were items like unity-2D, ubuntu-desktop, etc.

Anyway, now I'll proceed to reinstall some of the removed packages as/when needed.

Best method to getaway from this problem is to install fix404. You can read about it more here:

Under Ubuntu, the APT package index is a database containing all packages of repositories (PPAs) defined in the /etc/apt/sources.list file. To update this database after adding some repositories, we need to use this command from the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

Sometimes, when running the command given above, we get error messages (404 Not Found) that are the result of wrong PPAs, which may slow down the update process via the Terminal. In fact, this 404 Not Found error messages are not harmful at all, but you can use Fix404 to detect and remove these PPAs.

To install Fix404 on Ubuntu 11.04, launch the Terminal and run these commands:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:lkjoel/fix404
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fix404

To install on Ubuntu 10.10/10.04, download this deb package here.

To start using Fix404, run this command (root privileges required):

sudo fix404

Then follow displayed instructions to disable PPAs causing the 404 Not Found Error.
