View Full Version : [ubuntu] sudo service apache2 start - /bin/sh: Can't open /etc/init.d/apache2

After upgrading to the latest Ubuntu on my workstation, I get the error message:

$ sudo service apache2 start
/bin/sh: Can't open /etc/init.d/apache2
However, when I execute:

$ sudo sh /etc/init.d/apache2 start
* Starting web server apache2
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully
qualified domain name, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName

It apparently works fine. However, I would like to automatically start apache on startup, since I use it for heavy web development. This is the only thing that is really annoying after the upgrade.

I also looked at the symlink:

$ ll /bin/sh
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2011-10-21 11:22 /bin/sh -> dash*

This is the content of the upgraded apache2 init script:

$ cat /etc/init.d/apache2
#!/bin/sh

I also tried:

$ echo '#!/bin/sh
> echo test me' > test; chmod +x test; ./test
test me

So executing scripts seems to work fine. I'm really puzzled by this one, hence my post.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Edit:
Executing the following seems to have worked around the problem but not solved it. It's still a mystery to me:

sudo mv /etc/init.d/apache2 /etc/apache2/
ln -s /etc/apache2/apache2 /etc/init.d/apache2
service apache2 restart
