96 history

Line 48 marks today and where I started doing things that probably lead to the problem.
Here is what I was trying to do, install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme

My instructions from a link on gnome-look

49 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/testing
50 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
51 sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme

That didnt work, next I found a randome site and followed its instructions

52 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/gnome3

Now this is when it stricks me that I probably forgot a simple command

53 sudo apt-get update
54 sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme

and then I thought, I probably didnt need the last respetory

56 sudo add-apt-repository --help
57 sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:ferramroberto/gnome3
I then thought it was odd, that it stated you are going to add when i read that -r was for remove so I copied it and then acedently ran what I coppied several times. Then I decided I dont really want the rsomething testing source and decided to remove it, and since the gnome one was also added, i decided to remove it as well.

75 sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:ricotz/testing ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
76 sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:ricotz/testing
77 sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:webupd8team/themes
78 sudo add-apt-repository -r ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3

I then ran update manager, and when it removed gnome-shell, realized I probably did something wrong. I restarted, and found the new GNOME session was removed, but gnome clasic and the other were still there. I then attempted to fix the situation by running

79 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
80 sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz
81 sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
82 sudo apt-get install libdvdread4
83 sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool
84 sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-user-theme
which helped to a small extent, but something was still wrong, i then deleted the file etc/apt/sources.list and renamed the sources.list.save which looked completly different from the newer version, when that didnt work I whent to the file in sources.list.d that it claimed to have problems with (on line 2) and deleted it then re added it to my system via terminal, that didnt help at all and lead me to where I am now.
update manager gives me an error telling me to check my internet connection and in details states.

come to think of it is that one I added or one that was on the system to began with? I cant tell anymore. If you are as confused as I am could you just copy the software sources list that you have or is default for ubuntu 11.10? also, I can see another pannel behind the now transparent gnome pannel at the top of my desktop, it says the usual... File, Edit, View...

One of the biggest problems is that nautilus is displaying its global menu in the background

that really needs sorting by the devs ..... its on any transparent background in Gnome shell.

i.e File Edit Tools Bookmarks Helpwhy you have blank bits though in between is odd ....

What graphics card do you use ....

go into synaptic

you can remove the repos for ricotz ..... as they are normally just for testing ....

ctrl+alt+t ......... brings up a terminal

sudo synaptic

goto settings >>> repositories >> other software

then untick the ricotz ppa

Thanks, it seams to be working fine now.
As for the blank bits, I am not sure which bar your talking about, if its the gnome 3 bar then... yes its odd, I just noticed how far off the icons are from their supposedly containing box, and then their is a blank box next to the activities...I am clueless.
Thanks for your help, I had really confused myself again. : D
(I wont tell you what I was planing on doing next, defiantly incorrect method)

For the global-menu problem it seems you can safely remove the packages (if you don't use it)

I've done this:

sudo apt-get remove appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-gtk appmenu-qt

Get it from here: http://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/how-to-disable-global-menu-in-ubuntu-11-10-tip/
