I was running 10-4 when I got a notice that 10-10 was available so I hit the download and then the install. Now my computer locks up with a non functioning terminal screen and a "checking battery status "
I can restart in recovery mode with a functioning terminal screen but that is all.
I am running an old Dell tower with two hard drives with MS on one and U on the otherl. I run two monitors, ;an external HD and an 8 gig USB thumb
I have tried to tar my home dir but it will only handle 4 gigs out of the 10 I have.
I had a back up going to the U cloud but I don't know how to access it from the terminal.
I would like to return to 10-4 and skip 10-10, any help would be appreciated.

Try taking several small backups from /home rather than one big. Also a backup of xorg.conf is good to have.

After that a fresh install of 10.04 or 10.10 is the way to go.
