Sorry if there's any awkward expression. I'm not a native English speaker.

First, I installed Lubuntu, which uses LXDM. After that, xubuntu-desktop was installed via apt-get with no option. I selected to use LXDM at the time. When I try to log in with Xubuntu Session with LXDM, It just goes back to ID-writing field. There was nothing special in /var/log/lxdm, and I can't find log file from xfce.

After that, I tried to use LightDM, but when I choose LightDM with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm" and boot with it, the console screen with X.org messages and blank-screen with a mouse cursor switches each other over and over, like blinking. Next is the log file generated when I stop LXDM and run LigntDM with --debug option in console.

and then next part appears repeatdly

Giving "--test-mode" option makes no difference.

There's lines saying

[+1.65s] DEBUG: Starting session unity-greeter as user lightdm logging to /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log
and

[+1.78s] WARNING: Failed to open log file /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log: Permission denied
in the log but I can't find /var/log/x-0-greeter.log, there's only x-0.log and lightdm.log(which is generated by --debug option) in the folder. Maybe unity-greeter has some problem?

So, For short, these are what I want to ask.
1) Is it obvious that LXDM can't run Xfce? if not, Could you help me finding the reason why I can't?
2)Why can't I use LightDM?

Thank you for reading.

I also have this problem, and posted separately before finding this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11544334#post11544334

(I don't recall being asked to choose a display manager during lubuntu or xubuntu desktop installation though.)

It is not a desktop problem. It is an Xauthority problem. I posted a fix for that in this post:

Yes - thanks.
(I just posted here because I appeared to have the exact same problem.)
