Oneiric 11.10 - Create a Desktop launcher or add to Unity launcher?

In Ubuntu 11.10 using Unity, I have software that I need to run and I'm trying to create a launcher for it with great difficulty.

I can't seem to add it to the Unity launcher - can anyone steer me in the right direction?

Or, as an alternative, I'd like to create a desktop launcher for it, but that is also proving difficult - any suggestions?

Use the alacarte (apt:alacarte) menu editor to create a menu item for it. You can then do whatever you want with it.

Sorry, but it's still not clear to me how using that menu editor I can add that to the Unity launcher.

Never mind - I got. Create it, then move it to Unity launcher.
