View Full Version : [ubuntu] Architecture of sound system on 11.10?

I did a fresh install of 11.10 and lost sound. I go to Sound Settings and select the Hardware tab. Then I select "Internal Audio" (from "Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output"). Sound works fine. But there seems to be no way to save this change. I close the window, reopen, and it has gone back to HDMI.

I don't mind troubleshooting my sound problem, but I have no idea what the architecture of the sound system is. Does it use ALSA? How about PulseAudio? How do these fit together? What additional software tools do I need to install in order to troubleshoot my sound problems?

It's difficult to troubleshoot when I don't know what to look for. Any pointers to where this is documented?
