Desk home blacks out desktop

On 11.10, once you use Desk Home, the desktop goes black and you can never see anything else on your desktop! You can start applications from the icon bar, but you can't see them! The desktop is black! The exception is Desk home, which still displays your shortcuts.

Have I missed some intuitive mouse-click or key combo that uncovers my desktop?

This doesn't happen with the "Ubuntu 2D" desktop.
Other than that, I can't see any difference between "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu 2D".
