I installed the Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu 11.10 and the font rendering was horrible. I uninstalled the desktop but my fonts are still horrible and nothing I can do much improves them. I came across a year old post about this same problem. It said Kubuntu adds: ~/.fonts.conf which somehow screws up font rendering. Any idea how I can remove this? Or is something else that Kubuntu changed messing up my fonts? BTW fonts look great in Unity/Gnome 3 and also in Xubuntu on a separate partition, so it is something in KDE. I noticed the same poor font rendering in Mepis using KDE. Any help getting my good looking fonts back would be much appreciated.

I finally found the answer:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/15010/how-to-fix-choppy-fonts-after-using-kde-system-settings

Shame that Kubuntu doesn't do a better job with fonts, that's the only thing I didn't like about it.
