Anyone tried the modern iterations of all three and have an opinion on the matter?

I want to experience all the nifty integrated applets and whatnot in the current Ubuntu release, but not if I have to give up my second display. Launcher/panel stuck on the leftmost edge of the leftmost display is probably a deal breaker -- that display is waaay over yonder at the edge of my desk at a 30 degree angle and only gets used when I'm sitting up in my chair with good posture while writing research papers and the like. Front and center of my desk is right-hand display, and that's where my launcher/panel/whatever needs to be.

Sorry, can't help you out with gnome or unity. But kde has a excelent dual screen support. It has even improved with kde 4.7. There is nothing i could complain about.

You can set the right display as the main, then you have the launcher in the middle.
