Is this some kind of concerted effort to create a welcoming environment for the noobs?

I've got my BlinkinCat Avatar now and don't think I could get better one - but hey - why not - a change is as good as a holiday and I can always revert - :)

Is there some kind of restriction based on bean/post count with that?

Perhaps...

I thought it was a halloween thing, at first.

Now, I know better, or maybe not.

Thought I saw killer rabbits, but it could just be flashbacks from the 70s.

*eyes dart left, right, etc.*.

Monty Python is the armageddon of comedy; if I didn't have my beloved IE trollface as my avatar I'd certainly follow.
It's way better than pictures of cats...

PS: Easter egg video of one of their most hilarious sketches ever:
Fish Dance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9SSOWORzw4)

NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise!... Surprise and fear... fear and surprise... Our two weapons are fear and surprise... and ruthless efficiency! Our three weapons are fear, and surprise, and ruthless efficiency... and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope... Our four... no... Amongst our weapons... Hmf... Amongst our weaponry... are such elements as fear, surpr... I'll come in again.

Please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion. Let's not bicker and argue over who killed who.

People's Front of Judea

they hated the Judean People's Front more than the Romans :p

Reg: All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?
Attendee: Brought peace?
Reg: Oh, peace - shut up!
Reg: There is not one of us who would not gladly suffer death to rid this country of the Romans once and for all.
Dissenter: Uh, well, one.
Reg: Oh, yeah, yeah, there's one. But otherwise, we're solid.
