Long story short, I tried upgrading to 11.10 last night and it failed miserably. I have a newly formatted hard drive with no root file system/partitions/anything and an external hard drive with a root file system that was created on accident during an 11.04 install back in april. With my ext. drive powered on, the installer gives me the option of using the root file system in the ext. drive, but it obviously doesn't detect my int. drive because there is nothing on it.

Is there a way to transfer my root file system from my external hard drive to my internal one in a way that the installer will be able to utilize it?

btw: be prepared to speak n00b

I don't think you should have to be transferring anything. I'll post a more detailed reply in the original thread (that this post may be merged with).
