I upgraded 11.04 to 11.10. After restarting it freezes on the Ubuntu logo screen. I rebooted (Ctrl+Alt+Del) several times and nothing has changed.

Thanks

Hi there,

I have had real problems with the upgrade too. At what stage does it freeze ? I thought that mine was frozen as I had a black screen, but if I did a Ctrl-Alt-F1 then a Ctrl-Alt-Del, then it rebooted and went throught the same cycle. With me it was the graphics driver.

Yes... The correct thing to do would be to boot into a TTY Text Console or a LiveCD...

A LiveCD would be easier. Once you boot into the Live OS Image (Try) > Places > Open your partition where you have Ubuntu installed > Navigate to /var/log/xorg.0.log > open it with the text editor.

Open a browser and post that file here. (remember to put them inside code tags.) That will tell us what is loading and if anything failed.

What may be needed besides the results of that is info on your video card... From a terminal session:

lspci -vnn | grep VGA
Togetther, they would tell us what you have and if there are the correct drivers installed for it. Some older drivers, even though for yuor card, do not work with unity nor gnome3.

--- Just for further Info ---
If it is not in your graphics driver (which it usually is and is suspected first), then if something else, we would them need to see the syslog and dmsg log...

I've booted using the live cd and typed this into the terminal "lspci -vnn | grep VGA" the result was this:

Okay here goes... (your video drivers for your nVidia card are not installed.

Boot and hold the shift key down repeatedly until your grub menu appears. > Press the "e' key, which will put you into an edit mode. > Arrow down to the line that starts with "linux" > Arrow right to the words "quiet splash vt.handoff=7" and replace with "--verbose single" > press <cntrl><x> to boot the kernel.

It will boot to a TTY Text Console. > Login > ...

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo service lightdm start

Tell me how that goes.

Many thanks for the reply, MAFoElffen.

I did as you said, but after entering "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current" it told me that "nvidia-current is already the newest version."

After entering "sudo service lightdm start" a whole bunch of text appeared on the screen, but it eventually just froze. :(

One of the things which appears a lot is what I think is the driver for my canon printer (I hope I've copied correctly): "udeva[393]:SYSFS{}=will be removed in a future udev version, please use ATTR{}=to match the event device, or ATTR{}=to match a print device, in /etc/udev/rules.d/80-canon-mfp.rules:35". This goes on for a bit with the last number changing for each entry.Could be unrelated to the problem though.

By the way, it's a dual-boot machine with Windows 7, both 64-bit, and this is an upgrade from 11.04.

Can one try a non-nvidia driver perhaps? How does one do that?

I could "resolve" the problem. Here is what I did:

My problem was that yesterday I was with Ubuntu 11.10 and today it didn't started saying FAIL in a line about a runlevel V or something the most of the time I tried.

So instead starting using the default first entry in GRUB (kernel 3...)
I used the second entry (kernel 3 (recovery mode or something ...

And then a new window with some options and I choose the first one that
said "resume ...."

And ubuntu started. Then I opened the "Additional Drives" program and there I had two drivers:

1): NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) [Recommended]
2): NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (post-release updates) (version current-updates)

I was using the second. I deactivated it and now ubuntu 11.10 starts without any problem.

I am going now to try the first driver. I have a GTX460 and I need its GPU power for rendering (it has 336 processors) so I would have to go back to 11.04 if none of these two drivers works.

I will post what happens with first driver.

Bao2

Well I tried the first Nvidia driver in Additional Drivers as said above and now ubuntu is working flawlesly apparently.
We will see if it continues working or hangs tomorrow.

So, the second driver from Nvidia in Additional drivers seems be the problem that people is having (perhaps using the terminal to install the driver is installing the second?). Use Additional drivers app and install first one.

Unfortunately for me, this doesn't start ubuntu for me. :(

Good luck. It looks like your system is working now. :)

You need deactivate the nvidia driver. I did it graphically and I don't know how to do it in edit mode in grub. So if someone knows please post here.

When you deactivates the nvidia driver ubuntu will start.
Then you go to Dash and type "additional" and you see Additional Drivers application. Open this app and select the first nvidia driver (has "recommended" in the name) and seems to work.
I could restart now several times ubuntu 11.10 without any more hang outs.

Back to your question in Post #7... Yes. 2 Things to try.

First, before that, since you now have a driver installed, we'll try something else that it may be. At a command prompt:

sudo apt-get install gdm
At the end of its install it will ask you which dm to use, lightdm or gdm... Select gdm.

Try. You can always go back via

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
If that doesn't work to boot graphics... From a Commadline

sudo mv /etx/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
sudo reboot
On rebbot, hold down the shift key. When the grub menu comes up, press "e'. That will put you into an edit mode. Arrow down to the line that begins with "linux". Arrow right to where is says "quiet splash" and before it says "vt.handoff=7"... Insert "nomodeset" Press <cntrl><x> and it will boot.

Tell me if that boots your graphics session. If it does, you could try using a VEAS driver just by saving this to a text file:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "vesa" # Change this to the driver you want
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

And copy it over to /etx/X11 as being named as xorg.conf.
*** Of course to use this with your video card, you would have to add "nomodeset" to Grub's kernel boot line in the boot options... as persistant (meaning persistent or used all the time).

Setting the driver to VESA didn't work, so I followed the steps above and set it back to gdm.

I logged in and managed to install the nvidia 173 driver. After a reboot the computer started perfectly.

Many thanks! That was excellent. I really appreciate all the time you have put in to this.

Hi everybody,

I have not gotten any responses so far. I thought that some clarification is needed.

I performed 2nd installation clean.

I did the installation off flash drive. For some reason I got at the very end message that CD ROM connection failed. After that installation asked for restarting. I restarted and got the following message:
-----------------------
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs
------------------

I ran installation off a CD and it was fine.

Thanks so much for this. I was able to fix my work computer before the workweek started. Fingers crossed this doesn't happen again!
