11.10 boots to black screen after network problem

Hi,

I upgraded my Ubuntu-VM (VMworkstation 7.1.4 build-385536) from 11.04 to 11.10 last night, which worked fine at first, but today Ubuntu boots to a black screen after the waiting for network connection message.

Any ideas how I can start a terminal, so I can at least try some of the known fixes? ctrl+alt+F1 doesn't work, tried it when in black screen and during the waiting for network connection message.
