View Full Version : [SOLVED] Grub "ELF magic" error; reinstall didn't fix

I tried posting this in General Help, but it was off the first page within an hour and nobody replied.
I installed Kubuntu from the live USB. The installation was fine; no errors reported, no crashes, everything seemed great. I restarted to have grub throw me "invalid arch independent ELF magic" and a prompt. Reinstalling grub (using the 11.04 alternative installer in rescue mode) didn't help, nor did running grub-install or grub2-update myself, nor going through the Kubuntu installer again. The flash was made with unetbootin, and I'm using a ThinkPad X120e, which uses UEFI hardware. Grub has worked here before, as well. If you could please offer suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!

I can pick out a few things here that don't look quite right to me, like (,msdos5) at the beginning and possibly that it refers to the OS as Ubuntu. What do you think of it?

Also, thanks for that support doc link! It was progressive, though I got the error again any time I used insmod, so I couldn't get the regular grub prompt commands; only the grub recovery ones. Thank you for helping!

Boot repair disk fixed everything! I purged grub and reinstalled fresh, and it boots to a beautiful list of all my OSs. Thank you so much!
