Need advice for 9.04 Jaunty reinstall without distroying files

I installed 9.04 on a coworkers laptop about 3 years ago. He has now lost his password and wants me to get access to his pc. I read that the only solution is a reinstall. No problem. I plan to backup his home directory, sources.list and his program package list.

When I reinstall will I be able to just restore this items with no special configuring? Is there an easier way, such as reinstalling over the old installation without destroying any files?

9.04 is no longer supported. I suggest your friend do a fresh install of 10.10 or later.
