I installed Xcfe today as I don't like Unity or GNOME 3. I do have the problems changing settings however. Anything that requires root doesn't load, apart from Synaptic Package Manager. I have tried changing the commands in the main menu, and that hasn't made them work. Nor has running the commands that should launch them in the terminal. Straight terminal commands can work as root (i.e. sudo apt-get install some_package).
EDIT: Other settings changes aren't working either, including Appearance and Keyboard Layout. Panels can be changed fine, however.
