ok I just D/L and installed 11.10 in Vbox. installed the gnome-panel so I could get classic mode... it doesn't have the system menu, nor can I add anything to the panel, or even alter panel settings. at least not in the same way I do on my beloved 10.10. is this how things are to be or am I missing something very important?

You need to hold Alt to edit the panel. The System menu has been replaced by the user menu on the right.

Hold ,alt> key and right-click the mouse... But it is already there under the user_name on the upper right.

It's not that it was changed... This is Gnome3, a major upstream rewrite from the ground-up. This was "created" that way. Some of the "kind of "extras" things from gnome2 are still being rewritten to recreate those in Gnome3.
