View Full Version : Do You Miss Anything From 11.04?

Are there any features that you liked in Ubuntu 11.04 that weren't carried over to 11.10?
I'm using 11.10 right now, and I have to say I really like it. Here are a few of the things I miss:
- Synaptic Package Manager installed by default. I really liked it, and used it a lot.
- The little button on the top panel to open the dash. I use the Super key, so losing launcher space was a downside for me.
- AskUbuntu is promoted as "the best place to go to for Ubuntu support" in the installer. What's with that? Isn't UF the official forum?
- Somehow I feel the wallpapers aren't as good as the Natty ones were. For the first time in a while, I'm compelled to go on the Interblagz to find some wallpapers...

Yes, being able to add custom command in the "open with" drop down menu. I am wondering what the heck are the gnome dev thinking in taking that away? (It has nothing to do with Ubuntu or Unity btw)

I was wondering the same thing about Gnome 2 and why they decided to drop a perfectly good working Gnome for Gnome 3 that is horrid.

I noticed that too. I downloaded Wunderlist, and then couldn't figure out how to open it. I double clicked on it, but nothing happened. I tried it in the terminal, and I realized that it was corrupt. This would've been much easier with old Gnome 2.

At least it removes the problem of accidentally leaving the box checked to set this application as default! = D It's crazy how often this happens, and folks end up coming to support with folders opening in VLC by default, etc.

The difference isn't as big as you're thinking. Between 11.04 and 10.10 using Unity, the most noticeable differences are in Unity itself.

What I miss:
1) evolution mail... it been my mail client for years. the migration to thunderbird has been pretty nice.
2) gpass it's been my password manager forever. thankfully I was able to import all my passwords to revelation.
3) synaptic as default. yeah kind of a pain that I have to manually install that now. sometimes it's just easier. luckily there is always apt and dpkg.
loving everything else so far. I am always willing to move on and try new things so this is just plain fun for me.

Same here. I love Evolution. Thunderbird does seem extremely promising, however.

You do realize you can make it just like gnome 2, right? Either learn how to use it, or move on. But in general, incessant whining is very unbecoming for anyone.

It's pretty simple really, the gnome devs decided to start with a fairly clean sheet, instead of trying to maintain the horrible code that was Gnome 2. Gnome 2 was released in June 2002, and had a good run, now it's time for something new.

lol.
I use Xubuntu, and this release is better than the previous one, mainly because they finally dropped GDM for something lighter.

AFAIK you actually gain some Launcher space as one new launcher is added (Dash) and 2 are dropped (Applications and Files & Folders)

The Gnome devs are going to be dropping support for gnome 2 and newer apps are going to be coded for the newer DM and not Gnome 2.

In old unity you were able to just press enter to launch an app (or well start -> search -> enter) but that appears to have been removed. Also the ability to change font size is gone which I think is kinda major

F*in wireless drivers that work, graphics that don't screw up every 30 sec, the easy ability to change the icons I want, I could go on...
Not a happy camper here!

The font issue is a gnome 3 thing, nothing to due with unity. What I read is basically no one was maintaining the old font settings dialogue, so with gnome 3 it went away.
However you can easily get all these settings and more back by installing gnome-tweak-tool.

I did like having the old UI out of the box, though the Unity environment in 11.10 is way less buggy for me, so I'm actually giving it a go right now. In 11.04, my webcam never worked consistently and my machine wouldn't shut off properly around half the time.
I haven't had those problems so far in 11.10 and my laptop seems to be running quieter to boot. So, for me, the few things I miss about 11.04 I am happy to sacrifice haha

Being able to set the correct DPI value for my display. Not having the option of course means that the subpixel font rendering has zero change of working correctly.
And less important, but still a bit disappointing since I really loved this feature, Nautilus having the ability to assign emblems to files and folders and set directory-specific background colors and patterns. Those were really great features, especially for those of use who prefer the spatial file management mode...
DPI setting is something I'll probably keep on fighting with until I get it fixed some way or other, the emblem/background thing is something I guess I can live with.

Could not get the build-in bluetooth working, even after fiddling with it for most of two days. The BT LED would not even light up. Finally gave up and reinstalled 10.10 from scratch, and BT started working without my doing anything. Wasn't happy with Unity or Gnome 2 anyway.

The ability to change colours of various windows and themes etc.
I like Unity but dislike the bland schemes that are available.

You're right that it was a problem that the box was checked by default. But it was really nice to have a box at all! Now that they removed it completely, I don't know how to make text files open with emacs by default instead of gedit.
And I agree with previous posts that the custom command entry is missing from 'open with other application'.
Synaptic being gone is not that bad, since it's easy to re-install and thankfully it still works the same way as in previous Ubuntu versions.
What I hate about the new gnome is that you can't customize the panels any more. Now I'm stuck with the date and time at the center (logic???) of the top panel and an (in my opinion) totally useless bluetooth icon.
And they really should have kept the list of startup applications. Most of them I want to switch off anyway as they are useless to me. (Fortunately, someone posted the solution to this problem here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1795650).)

GNOME 2. I hate both Unity and GNOME-Shell, and the only thing they're doing in the MATE GNOME 2 fork thread is arguing about what to do. In the meantime, I'm using XFCE, but it still doesn't feel the same.

No.
Regardless of the version of Ubuntu, I ALWAYS change wallpapers.

My battery-life was better on 11.04. Other than that, Oneiric is all better.

Me too. But I just activate Universe repo and then install it and I guess all is well.
- The little button on the top panel to open the dash. I use the Super key, so losing launcher space was a downside for me.
I use the Super key too, but I like the dash in the launcher. I really like how it allowed the panel to place things in the left corner. I don't miss not having dash-key on the panel.
- AskUbuntu is promoted as "the best place to go to for Ubuntu support" in the installer. What's with that? Isn't UF the official forum?
I think the forums allow more discussion and feedback. AskUbuntu is great though because it gives you a straight answer. I think AskUbuntu is the best place to start so users can see if there's a "definitive" answer right out the door.
- Somehow I feel the wallpapers aren't as good as the Natty ones were. For the first time in a while, I'm compelled to go on the Interblagz to find some wallpapers...
Just run a LiveCD of Natty and copy the wallpapers off. Then put them in Oneiric.

Synaptic Package Manager installed by default.
I haven't installed yet because I'm reading a lot of reviews to try to determine what's new first. I was surprised to see Synaptic is gone. I hope there will be a list of replacement suggestions in a help file or somewhere that's easy for a newbie to see and be able to install without asking for help. I use it for most everything.
Users who are brand new won't even know there ever was a place to get their stuff. :o
Or is the Software Center taking its place completely? I wouldn't think so.
