Using the 'Upgrade Manager' I'm trying to upgrade to 11.10 but I keep getting the following error:

"could not download the release notes
please check your connection"

Anyone got any ideas?

I'm getting this too. I'm guessing the servers are overloaded with download requests.

I have literally that exact problem.

I was told about the upgrade, so I plugged my laptop in, put it on a wired connection, closed everything else and started the upgrade. I went into university for about an hour to kill some of the time (estimated 14 hours) and when I got back there was a big error list saying it couldn't receive some files. So I closed it (I should have noted what they were) and tried to start again and then it gives me that error message.

It asks me to check my internet connection, but here I am.

Looking for an answer too.

Thanks

Same problem here too.

Yup, same here. Mine actually crashed halfway through the download of the updates. I've restarted the computer, but no luck.

Glad to see it's not just me. Is there any information that it may simply be too much traffic that's causing it?

I think it is due to the servers being overloaded. You can try downloading from one of the mirrors, which seems to be working for me.

Try this:

1) Go to Update Manager.
2) Click on 'Settings' at the bottom left.
3) Go to the 'Ubuntu Software' tab on the settings dialog that appears.
4) Click on the 'Download from' dropdown box and select 'Other...'
5) On the dialog that appears, click 'Select Best Server'.
6) It will scan all the servers for the fastest. When it has finished, accept it and try the upgrade again.

Reply to this thread if it works for you.

Thanks. Was using UK servers and it has now selected a German server which is doing the upgrade and the speed of the download is very good.

Worked for me! I will soon be rocking Ubuntu 11.10

NOTE FOR FUTURE RELEASES: Make 'select best server' the default when servers are overloaded! Simple programming this way will remove a painful paper cut in the upgrade experience!
