Hi folk,

I've loaded 11.10 today and it's great but for one thing. I cannot update properly or add new packages from the addresses below. Obviously some software packages are updating but anything from the ones below don't. I managed to load Synaptic but it cannot find quite a few packages. Not sure what I need to do to fix this. Launchpad seems to be in the 'software sources' list, although I don't see a key alongside the entry like there is for some other software sources. Is that the problem I ask?

http://ppa.launchpad.net/geod/ppa-geod/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/main/source/Sources

http://ppa.launchpad.net/geod/ppa-geod/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/main/binary-amd64/Packages

If anyone can help I'd be obliged. Thanks people.:D

Hi,
If you take a look at http://ppa.launchpad.net/geod/ppa-geod/ubuntu/dists/ , you'll see that oneiric isn't listed, and so therefore the URLs you mentioned won't work. Basically the author needs to create packages for Oneiric.

It's possible to modify the entry in Software Sources to use natty as the distribution instead of oneiric, although there's no guarantees that the packages will work properly, and it's really not recommended.

As I said, the best solution is to get the maintainer to package for Oneiric. :-)

Ezra.

ezramorris, thank you for confirming that. I've been running the 64bit version downloaded from an alternative site to the main Ubuntu download page. I don't know for sure if that makes any difference. But I downloaded another ISO from the main Ubuntu download page and it doesn't seem to have that problem, although none of the apps seem to require the launchpad site at the moment. It's running fine, so I guess this is solved.

Thank you for your help, it's appreciated.

This shouldn't make any difference. The issue is with the PPA rather than the Ubuntu installation.

Best method to getaway from this problem is to install fix404. You can read about it more here:

Under Ubuntu, the APT package index is a database containing all packages of repositories (PPAs) defined in the /etc/apt/sources.list file. To update this database after adding some repositories, we need to use this command from the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update

Sometimes, when running the command given above, we get error messages (404 Not Found) that are the result of wrong PPAs, which may slow down the update process via the Terminal. In fact, this 404 Not Found error messages are not harmful at all, but you can use Fix404 to detect and remove these PPAs.

To install Fix404 on Ubuntu 11.04, launch the Terminal and run these commands:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:lkjoel/fix404
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fix404

To install on Ubuntu 10.10/10.04, download this deb package here.

To start using Fix404, run this command (root privileges required):

sudo fix404

Then follow displayed instructions to disable PPAs causing the 404 Not Found Error.
