Here is the Link to the POLL >>> LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11368349#post11368349)

What you can do to help UBUNTU - let them know about your hardware and if it works .... in 11,10
http://friendly.ubuntu.com/participate/

New Approach to this ..... a few common solutions ... at the top ... picking useful threads ......
( as I have a good idea if they are re-occurring now - so although I will not be posting as many .......
The ones here at the top should be a good start to finding a solution for the main problems .....

If yours is not here and you think it should be let me know at the end of this thread the link and a good one liner for the problem

ATI graphics in Gnome Shell >>> LINK

Synaptic Problem a solution >>> LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1865094)

Xauthority Problem a solution >>> LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1863430)

Gnome-Shell Problem a solution >>> LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1864826)

Completing a upgrade a solution >>> LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1862762)

Slow Wireless Network connection >>> LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1863719)

Setting up the Resolv.conf file by using a Live CD >>> LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1863679)

Computer running slow >>> LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1861622&page=8)

After 1 Week doing this and hardly any replies now - I guess its over .... ( But I hope it helped somebody somewhere )
It may still come in useful .... for later upgrades ...... but hopefully these problems will be fixed soon .....
I will continue to help out on the threads where possible as that is less time consuming.

Next YEAR 12.04 >>> hopefully it will be different ....

http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/2209/welcometoupgrade.jpg

Question ..... if this had been displayed slightly differently before the upgrade would things have turned out any better .......
(clicking on ask me later at this point does nothing in my case) ......
(don't upgrade returns declined - as expected)

( I am asking this as part of my own personal interest ...... just to find out if it matters to anyone )

or can anyone think of a way that would make the upgrade safer than this .......

Maybe writing to a Flash Drive first ..... as they become cheaper and faster ..... maybe by Next April
they will be the main medium for everyone to use ..... a lot happens in 6 Months ......

http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/9044/buttons1upgradev002a.jpg

I have created this thread to try to keep track of any failed upgrades
hopefully from this we can work out why some of the failures occur ......

The ones I am seeing in these first 5 days are ......

STAGE 1 ...... The main problems

Problem 1 .... NETWORK .... Lock ups (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/+bug/811441) - possible bug - post 24 was a solution for some
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859630) Problem 2 .... ATI card .... Lock ups ..... ( LINK THAT MAY HELP (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859180) ) freezing at boot
Problem 3 .... 100 % CPU Usage Nautilus ......
Problem 4 .... Synaptic does not open .... segfault & other errors
Ptoblem 5 .... Losing the Desktiop settings .......
Problem 6 .... Wifi ...... Solution posted ....... LINK (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1860574)
Problem 7 .... External Hard Drive being removed causes freeze ..... BUGS (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11348435&postcount=14) ... Thread for this
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1778373

STAGE 2 .... Problems almost non recurring now ....... to give some idea to users that the above
are the main still to be aware of ......

Will put problems below here if I believe that they appear to be not causing as many problems now .......

Problem 1.... LOGIN - not accepting password .. Xauthority (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859233) * ( Day 3 problem appears to have died down )
Problem 2..... Evolution .... Mail Messages went missing - solution to move them to thunderbird (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859630)
Problem 3 .... Display & Themes not showing properly ..... GTK problem (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1859213) ... possible solution
Problem 4 .... Display problems using ATI with Gnome shell ..... ( needs a dev fix for this )

About problems due to upgrading (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1580857)

11.10 Oneiric

To be safe try it out on a liveCD or USB first ........
Backup any Data you need - try installing it clean - if you have space -
try it in a clean partition 15-20Gig for testing that things like your graphics picks
up and your networks ......

This time a
FRESH INSTALL (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1862775) ...... is probably best - as we have moved from Gnome2 to Gnome 3
( There seems to be less problem being reported from fresh installs in the forums. )

(Something may be done for the next release to try to avoid some of them happening
again ..... if we can get a grasp of what is going wrong .....

please post a link below if you have a valid upgrade problem .... from 11.04 to 11.10

(Power Outages can not be avoided - but running out of battery power on laptops can)

DO NOT ABORT THE INSTALL HALF WAY THROUGH ...... it takes a long time to do it .....
be prepared to wait ....... have lunch .... watch a movie ...... and then rest >>>
as many others will be downloading it at the same time ...... hours may pass .....

Possible things that may go wrong ..... through not taking care .....

1 ..... Making sure there are no errors on your existing system to start with

2 ...... Ensuring you have enough space on your drive for the upgrade

3 ...... Not doing it on Battery power from the laptop and finding it takes longer than expected .

Hope all goes well ......

____________________________________

Things appear to have eased off a bit - so I will update this again in 3 hours time .......
From Monday ...... to Friday ...... this may not get updated as regular ..... but I thought
I better say as people may be using this as some sort of guide ........

I still think its better to wait untill all the ones below are fixed ...... or at least have solutions
before moving to version 11.10 ........ * or failing that ,,, ( let 1 month pass then try ...... )
your choice as always ..... best of luck with whatever you decide to do .......

If you still can manually boot your install instructioins were almost correct. You were installing to sda1 a partition when you want to install to the MBR.

sudo grub-install /dev/sda <-Note just sda not sda1
sudo update-grub

I would check the

/etc/apt/sources.list

see if its changed the list to Oneiric .......

I did not intend to run this thread as a question and answer thread - but will help where I can ........

The idea was to keep a track of the ones that failed and hopefully see if in the future there
is a trend to the most common .... and a solution to stop them re-occurring ....

In your case though ..... it is quite possible it may have failed while in the download stage
which may allow you to recover .....

post the

/etc/apt/sources.list

I will have a look .......

I would run aptitude safe-upgrade and see what the list is it returns .......

post that too ..... but do not accept it yet ......

n ..... to find other solutions
q ( quits out of it )

but lets see what it recommends ..... first

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought Thread for failed upgrades would be a thread for failed upgrades.

I will copy my post to a new thread, and we can go on from there.

Thanks,
Tim

For this to work as I intended if you post the link to the thread ..... and a small statement
explaining why it failed ......

I will then sort them in the first post - so they can be identified by the nature of the fail .....

I think this is a good a place as any to say I think there may be an issue with upgrading from the amd64 Alternative ISO image.

I downloaded it off the torrents as I wanted to upgrade two systems and thought it was nifty way I could save bandwidth. The MD5 checked out, and I upgraded away on both systems choosing not to use the internet.

Both upgrades went through without a hitch, or so I thought. But, upon reboot I noticed on one system Banshee was missing and Nautilus was all broken (as in there were no icons and it looked as if it was set to high-contrast or something) checking the update manager asked me to do a partial upgrade which would involve downloading 315 packages. The other system had neither of these issues but outright refused to compile the drivers for its Wi-Fi card so I lugged it downstairs plugged it into the router and it has 183 packages to download, both are now downloading hopelessly slowly and probably downloading the same packages :(

I've not put this in a new thread because it's not a problem with an answer as such, more a issue other people probably have?

While I was watching the Beta Testing there were some issues with Nautilus .....

The icons thing seems to be re-occurring too ......

I noticed in the 4 upgrades that I did that there was a routine trying to access deleted folders ..... relating to the old gtk version .... and trying to re-create icons to put in this non existent folder ......

As I was doing it from a non GUI it was difficult to get a screen capture .....

I did mention it in Beta testing ..... but unless anyone else tried a upgrade from 11.04
to 11.10 ...... they would not see what I saw ......

Explaining things is always difficult and people tend to listen more when there are a few
people experiencing similar problems ..... that is one reason why I started this thread.

If you do get any issues highlight them on the forum though ,,,, as all I am doing here is
tracking things to try to make the developers aware that there are some issues,

My remarks alone mean nothing ..... but with a list of similar experiences from users
hopefully something will get changed ........

Best of luck with your upgrade ....

The way I have done my successful upgrades

once the etc/apt/sources.list is set to include the Oneiric repos is by using .......

aptitude safe-upgrade

My friend was upgrading to the newest Ubuntu 11.10 on re-boot he got the following:

At this point the computer would do nothing more. It is an Acer Aspire 4720Z
Laptop. Which had Ubuntu 11.04 for the operating system.

Additional information.

Computer will not boot. Have tried reinstall using a CD with Ubuntu 11.04 - 32 bit and Linux Puppy 5.2 all with same result.

Sounds to me like a hardware failure may have occurred on the boot drive ......

Can you post the problem onto the forum as a separate problem ....

As this thread was set up to monitor the failed upgrades and keep track of them as they are
raised ...... if you can add it as a new thread .... and post the link to it I will happily add it to
the list ......

You should always be able to boot a LiveCD ..... unless the liveCD is corrupt ..... check the Md5 sum ........ or fail to boot if a part of your hardware is not functioning properly .....

Additional information:

Puppy Linux did boot from CD on 2nd or 3rd try.

Seems todays errors have not included so many password login problems .....

a few others are now appearing though on Post 1 of this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11334068&postcount=1)

I have seen quite a few more threads all over the place. will see if i can find them and add them here.

This should become a good reference, comparison from 1 cycle o another and to show the devs the amount of problematic upgrades.

maybe is good idea to continually bump the thread with new info so more people can participate?

Cheers madjr ....

I had to sleep at one point so may have missed a few ...... but I do backtrack
to the other ones .... its a full time job keeping up with what is going on .

As many keep re-appearing ......

( There should be a automated way to track them )

Well done. It must be quite some work to keep track of this.

My solution to a failed upgrade is somewhat different. It can be seen in my signature. Feel free to distribute it, if there is no simple way out.

would be nice if all the fail upgrade threads were moved to their own section, so they can be better assisted and tracked. They just seem to appear all over :o

maybe a petition for this on the forum feature request section?

Very good idea ...... the problem is it needs someone to actually move them as they
appear , .... it needs a Mod .....

Like they move them to recurring or other other ditro ......

Would make it so much simpler for me ....... especially if they go through the list ......
above .......

( but they then still need to be sorted into categories ...... what this needs is something like a database controller - to sort them quickly (ME) ...... I have though about this before I started but it is so difficult if not impossible to implement on a moving live database like this )

The Solved ones are the most useful .......
People could quickly go there for the answers already supplied by others ...... ;)

The Installation and Upgrades forum is intended for this, but since we have Absolute Beginners Talk and General Help we must expect people to post there also.

It would be good with some new ideas for sub-fora, but let's wait until the 11.10 flood is ebbing out.

yes, the flood of threads should diminish soon, and not because less people are having failed upgrades, but because most threads have solutions in them and people are sent to these from Google.

so if you find a solution there's no need to report it again.

I think that you can take an approximate amount of 50% percent of the views and count them as users with similar issues.

At this point in time people are having less and less tolerance for these kind of problems. Is not funny to have to rescue your computer on every upgrade.

If something is not reliable enough it should not be offered.

And now you get this HUGE popup telling you to you to upgrade, with no warnings or anything...

Is like a mouse trap for new and unsuspected users and the upgrade button is the trigger..

also used the thread as reference.

anyone interested please add yourself.

Seems that they believe there are only two options ....

Upgrading .....

Clean Install ......

but there is a third

Clean install alongside your current OS ...... but it should be mentioned on the upgrade
screen so users know that they can keep there existing systems if they want to.

And also have the New Version installed in a Clean 20 Gig Partition ......

This would save so many lost systems ......

Anybody looking at this thread go to post 1 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1858475) on it .....

That is not on upgrading ..... that is a clean install .....

I just wish that was the case here ..... but it is not ........

They get a screen with one button on it ........ saying upgrade .......
