there is now a super easy to use version of Gimp for all the people that complained in the past:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP8c2R8YEb4

grab and learn more about AG 2.6 here:

http://www.adaptablegimp.org/

Now that's the power of open source. The hard times of RJ Gimp are ovar !

Next, I would like to see it in the ubuntu repos and AG 2.8+ with the monowindow option will be even more awesome. And heck why not merged this into main gimp?

edit:
nice "makeuseof" detailed article and intro to new TaskSets:
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/adaptable-gimp-gimp-easy-windows-linux/

How long till photoshop starts copying these features?

I don't see how it's easier apart from it having easy help links.

The program seems to be forcing me to consent to a "confidentiality and data retention" contract.

I can only click on the window containing that agreement, with the other windows unresponsive.

If I have "I do not agree" checked, then the "close" button is shaded and unresponsive.

If I have the "I agree to participate in this study" box checked, the "close" button becomes usable and presumably will allow the rest of the software to work.

In short, there doesn't seem to be an opt-out even if I don't want to contribute in the wiki.

Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program for any purpose.
[...]
Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

Is my being compelled to share my improvements if I use the software the same as the freedom to do so...? Why does my use of this software require that part of my purpose be contributing to the data-set and the study, instead of me being allowed to run it for any purpose?

AdaptableGIMP Logging Consent Form

[...]

Study Description
You must be 18 years or older to participate in this research study, or you must obtain the consent of your parent or legal guardian. Participation is completely voluntary and can be stopped at any time by removing this software or discontinuing its use.
We may also contact you through the software or the wiki to request further information about you and/or your use of the software. Providing this information would be purely voluntary, as well.

[...]

Adaptable Gimp Client
On the client-side (that is, on your computer), AdaptableGIMP automatically logs usage information and sends this data to a server owned and administered by the University of Waterloo Human Computer Interaction lab. We call this usage data. The usage data collected is described in more detail below.
Any customizations of the software that you make using our new customization tools are also recorded. We call this customization data. Any customization you make is automatically sent to the wiki and made publicly available to the entire user community.
We intend to use the logged usage data, user-created customizations, and content created on the wiki to build new innovations and improvements of the software, and to forward our research into new paradigms of user interaction.

[...]

Confidentiality and Data Retention
All logged data will be kept indefinitely by the researchers. These data may be shared with other researchers, under the condition that they follow the same terms and conditions that we have set out above. We may publicly release summary statistics or data that has been anonymized.
You should be aware that we make no guarantees regarding confidentiality, even though we do not intentionally collect personal information, and will make attempts to sufficiently anonymize any publicly-released data.

EDIT:

Usage Data Collected
[...]
-Statistical summaries of the file names you use when saving a document
[...]
-If you create your own custom scripts, your script names will be recorded (because ALL command names are recorded). Thus, if you name your script "john_smiths_acme_script", that script name will be recorded in the log files whenever the script is used

I'm going to go ahead and hit "I agree" and play around with this for a while, but I don't think I will be replacing GIMP with AdaptableGIMP until some concerns are addressed.

I don't see how it's easier apart from it having easy help links.

If you're already experienced, then you dont need this or will see much benefit.

apart from making things easier, it also let you search what you want to do, which for new users is invaluable as they frequently dont know where to start.

now that is easy what else will people complain about ?

Oh, there appears to be a "do not log for this session" option, but the license I just agreed to was pretty clear that they have the perpetual right to record and send the data regardless (if they don't record and collect the because I checked that box, it is out of kindness and not my right to privacy, which I already signed away).

Pretty good idea, but just like any other mod, it's going to fall behind the progress of the main development. In 20 years when Gimp 2.8 finally comes out, it will be another couple of years before this catches up.

It's pretty sad that Duke Nukem Forever was released before Gimp 2.8. :)

I saw that, but judging from their past history, I don't see it as being very accurate. It seems like things have kind of leveled off. I doesn't really look like things are going in the direction of their projection.

the problem is they wanted to do more than they can handle for 2.8

3 main developers can only do so much.

i personally think they should had released it first quarter or 2011 with just single window mode and bug fixes (which is what the majority were expecting from that release and by itself was a big change).

Then they could had taken their time with the much Harder (under the hood) stuff and launch it with 3.0 or 3.2....

the way things are going now, they might miss the date once again..

If you look at the tasks left, there are three blocker bugs left, so it's pretty much done. And the projection has the added benefit of motivating the devs too :D

I would have accepted it if it just provided layer folders.

The AG toolbox is nice, though. Just about anything you can throw a Search/Recent/All feature at is better for it.
