I have just finished setting up a webcam (Logitech QuickCam Express) to act as a security camera (using motion (http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome) to start recording when motion is detected). Very Spiffy :KS
All this automated-home-security-with-linux fun made me wonder. How hard would it be to create a small usb device to measure the on/off state of, say, a magnetic reed switch (such as this (http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/447e808702426ebe2740c0a87f9c074c/Product/View/L5211)
It would be nice to be able to have it generate an html page with the data, as that would make it very customizable (I'm thinking a map of the house with red/green 'lights' to mark an open or closed door, and even embedded webcam footage from Motion(motion can broadcast the stream)...)
I have a little experience with soldering and stuff, but have never done anything with making a driver or whatnot, or a program to interface with it.
