Now, the Supreme Court of India has directed all the courts across the nation to switch over to Ubuntu 10.04. The apex court has also given all the courts customised Ubuntu Linux DVD for installation.

It's because India is a poor country, not because Linux is good.

3rd largest economy on world has enough money for its court system to use Windows. Some of the richest on earth live in India as well as poor and POVERTY FYI is everywhere including the so called self proclaimed first world.

Linux is good. It may or may not be the best fit for you personally in every way, but it is very solid and the user experience CAN BE very good.

I think the TCO for Windows and Linux in an ordinary office environment is about the same.

You are talking about India there Windows costs as much as Linux (free ,pirated of-course ) so money is not an issue

That is pretty cool. The more people using Linux the better.

It is good but it seems that they are migrating away from Red Hat rather than WIndows so that doesn't increase the net Linux adoption.

Should we expect that the forum to be flooded with Indian judges? :)

Only if India is the only country in the world that uses their judges as IT support too (which they don't ;))

Interesting to choose Ubuntu above thee Enterprise Linux solution...

Yeah you think the Supreme Court cannot afford the best OS for its need? WIndows is definitely not 'good' as an OS, all it has going for it is OEM deals and more consumer end softwares support but it has nothing to do with Windows itself. Don't think judges need to play games though.

Not sure if the courts of all places would be using illegal software though. :)

I live below the United States poverty line with just the amount of money I receive every month... about 800 USD.

Heh! 800USD is a pretty decent salary in India though, but quite hard to sustain in USA. :)
I have been in both the situations.

Hahahaha! Thank you for making my day. :)
