View Full Version : [ubuntu] trouble with AVG FREE

I have installed avg free on ubuntu 11 and struggled through the terminal. message tells me it is installed and it will update OK but I can't get it to run Ubuntu software does not recognize it either
I am fairly new to ubuntu and I am in love with it
Can some one help me please?

Please post the errors that you are getting when you try to do something with it in terminal.

Just on the off chance that you don't realise that this application doesn't come with a gui - it doesn't.

Also AVG is a little flaky under linux.

Also most AV out there for Linux returns alot of false positives. AV for Linux is for if you share files with windows users more than anything, as there no currently wild viruses for Linux. Malware writers could if they so chose to target Linux but they dont so there is no real need to worry about AV software with Linux unless it is a gateway for say windows emails etc.


It can still suffer from trojans, rootkits etc, but that comes down to vigilence and making sure you stick to the security model and not disabling passwords or enabling root etc.

Common sense, dont tell your system you want it to do something unless you are sure etc. Linux assumes you know what you are doing ;-)

In browsers you can still suffer from XSS or CSFR, other script related issues so use things like NoScript plugin for firefox, Ad-block etc.

Thanks every one I am going to give all anti-virus programs a miss.After reading all your replies it looks like not much to worry about
