That was unexpected.

Can we just name it 'pine cone with feet' ?

That would be great..

Pangolin is good, sounds like Shaolin. But precise? It's probably gonna be the first Ubuntu that nobody will refer to by adjective.

The animal should have definitely been a penguin! And in the article, I saw a possum mentioned. I though it was spelled opossum...

Pinetrees in Africa drop these, they then walk away from their parent tree, find another pangolin to amalgamate with, and turns into a new african pinetree. Pangolins are basically male and female african pinetree-gametes like their human egg and sperm counterparts that fuses into a zygote in order to carry on the genes.

Trust me, I'm from the internet.

It's just not a fun adjective. There are a lot of fun P adjectives.

Two different words, actually. "Possum" was an informal name for the opossum that became the technical name for a specific, Australian branch of the family.

I kinda like it. Although, it does seem a bit suggestive to me that they chose pangolin over penguin. Perhaps a nod to the folks at System76?

There are already plenty of people not happy that Ubuntu = Linux for a lot of people in the world... having gone and stolen the mascot to might be too much :)

I'm a bit disappointed that it wasn't something ending in Penguin.

I had to look up what 'pangolin' meant.

A positive point obviously is that Ubuntu will continue to be developed, at least until 12.04.

The title of not found was just the title of the article from Marc.

And normally, the oldest thread wins the title.

So from a neutral point of view (not considering spoilers or non-descriptive titles), this was the correct way to do it.

About the name: I love to learn a new animal every Ubuntu release, but the adjective? Come on, he could have found something more original.

Who's ever gonna say "let's boot up precise"?

I didn't even know this animal existed until I read Shuttleworth's blog post.

Looks like a walking pineapple. Kind of cute I suppose. I like that part of the name.

But I don't like the "Precise" adjective they used. Seems pompous, and redundant. If the operating system itself is truly precise, you shouldn't need to say so in the name. It should stand alone on its own if it deserves it.

By the way, did you guys know that one can find Fibonacci's numbers in the number of scales in a pine cone? I wonder if the same goes for a pangolin.

That would have been awesome. :D

Quite unlikely, though. And not only because it doesn't fit with the animal theme.

If the Ubuntu Satanic Edition is still alive they could definitely use that name...

According to OMGUbuntu, 12.04 is going to be named "Precise Pangolin."

What do you guys think?

I think it's a unique name. It sort of reminds me of the names that the old Ubuntu releases had (Warty Warthog, Breezy Badger). Probably in that I barely knew anything about the animals they were being named after.
At least it's not a cat. I was really beginning to think there was a cat theme here.
I personally submitted "Perpetual Puma."

I did a quick Google and a check of the first page of the Community Cafe, but this'll still probably end up in Recurring Discussions. :)

Wow. Good eye.

I have to say that I agree. This may be an attempt to popularize System76.
I know I Google "meerkat" instead of "10.10" sometimes. People doing this with 12.04 would get some System76 results, too.
The only problem I can see is someone searching for the laptop, and having to sift through tons of 12.04 stuff.
