Hi and thanks in advance

I'm a confident Windows user, so I'm new to the whole Ubuntu thing ...

So, the problem is I have a pc here which currently has Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) all is good with it except it doesn't connect to the internet, well it does but disconnects which I believe is an internal problem entirely out of my know how.

And without the internet I obviously can't download updates, software etc; I can't get anything to please the owner of the pc, although he is happy with the whole layout of things he can't watch videos, listen to music etc.

I had asked a question previously and was led to the following sites:
1 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Synaptic/Offline
2 https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

They helped somewhat, but after all the google searches etc I couldn't find a STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO INSTALL TAR.GZ FILES his PC. Mine is Xubuntu (Soo jealous of the fact he is Ubuntu 11.04 btw)

So, I have 2 questions.

1. Could someone please give me step by step instructions to install onto his pc?

Or if not

2. Is it possible to download any Ubuntu which includes all updates and codecs etc to get his videos and music playing?

Thanks again
