I have tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my old Gateway laptop. The install starts and continues for some time then hangs. Is there a small version I could try that may be easier to install here?

How much memory does your "old Gateway laptop" have installed? It may be that the amount is too little to run Ubuntu. IF that's the case, you could try Lubuntu.
