ATI display number overlay after suspend

When i resume from suspend the system shows 2 red boxes with a number in it on the screens.
Those are the boxes to identify the connected displays.

However, the boxes don't go away, they only disappear when i open the ATI catalyst control center and close it afterwards.
Does someone have an idea how to fix this?

This happends since i have installed HAL. Without HAL the suspend doesnt work properly for me.

I'm using an external monitor with my laptop, with the laptop screen turned off. Without the ati driver, I get no picture on either displays after suspend, with the ati driver I get the big red box that won't go away.
