How does WUBI work? Can this process be applied to other distros?

... I know that WUBI installs Ubuntu to a Virtual Disk Image. But how does it manage to boot from a VDI??? and, can Wubi be modded to install other distros than Ubuntu?

Wubi uses the windows boot loader and offers the choice between Windows or Ubuntu . When Ubuntu is selected Grub opens and the kernel options are offered just as in a Ubuntu installation .

I think there other distros with Windows installers , http://www.jolicloud.com/download comes to mind . I don't see why a Wubi type installer could not be used with other distros . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wubi_(Ubuntu_installer)
