Hey guys, I'm currently running 10.10 and want to upgrade to 'natty narwhal' so I downloaded natty, created a startup usb with the built in startup disk creator and went to run it, but it only displayed 1 row of text about copyright stuff. I am not sure what to do next, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Maybe the download is corrupt. Did you verify the downloaded iso file? If not, here is how to do it:

Did you download the iso file from an official download source?

wait for version 11.10. if you install 11.04 you must upgrade a week later again to 11.10.

try this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/22747/how-to-upgrade-from-ubuntu-10-10-to-11-04

You can install 11-04 and keep that version if you want to. You don't have to upgrade to 11-10 :-)

I've just tried that, and the 'hash' that the terminal spat out matches on that page with the lists, what should I try next?

sorry, should specify that this was a reply to 2F4U

How long did you leave the one line of text? It should carry on after that line.

what you have selected in the terminal in the screenshot.
I have compared the highlighted section of alphanumerical code from the terminal the ubuntuhashes page. My terminal said 8b1085bed498b82ef1485ef19074c281 which is what was next to
ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

Hey guys, thanks to everyone that helped, in the end, I wiped the usb and restarted the whole process from scratch. As a result, I am now running Natty Narwhal!!! once again thanks.
