gconf2 installation error

I've just installed 11.04 and get something like this message

/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256

I've tried to reinstall but no difference. I cannot load gnome.

Take it this isn't going to be easy, so have put Fedora 15 on for now. Would like an answer if one ever comes up though.
