and the Outdoors theme was to use Gion (http://www.silvestre.com.ar/?p=40) icons

All that XGL got me dizzy, so I decided to try the exact opposite and installed fluxbox. After a bit of tweaking, I really like it! Fast and responsive, and really good looking as well, IMHO...:)
Here's the window I spend the most time in, can't get much simpler than that! I've removed borders, menus and scrollbars, so it's just pure emacs..:)

e17 has been amazing stable and the most confortable Desktop Environment i used. Fast, full configurable, light and very eye-candy.
Since it's compiled from cvs you can use any time version you want, so when one finds a problem is just a question of go back one or two days and wait till the question is solved ;)

thank you for the compliment. i don't think i have any real skill with gimp. if anything i have ever done has been at all worthwhile, it was done using simple, basic gimp operations (crop, adjust color and sharpness, brightness and contrast, use of filters).

Btw, something i've wondered for a while. Who is your avatar?

it's zhang ziyi. she's been in crouching tiger, hidden dragon - rush hour 2 - memoirs of a geisha. she's my favorite actor/actress. if you ever get to see a bunch of her films, just notice how each of her characters run differently (making use of her skills as a dancer, no doubt).

This is Cape Town at night and my parents have this view from their upstairs balcony. Not that they took this photograph - it was professionally done. :-)

What did you use to get that panel with the program launchers? I really like Xubuntu and would really love to have a nice looking bar like that!;)

I just use Gdesklets, in the new Xubuntu it just automatically starts without having a autostart folder on my desktop....

As for getting openbox to work fuscia, once I installed it and booted into it, I had nothing, no menus or anything, I was really lost as to what I was supposed to do. So I just uninstalled it since my XFCE worked and Gnome worked. I really do like the look of openbox and fluxbox though and will probably try again soon.

As for getting openbox to work fuscia, once I installed it and booted into it, I had nothing, no menus or anything, I was really lost as to what I was supposed to do. .

i was baffled by that at first, as well. it's there, just right-click on the desktop for a menu. you can use something like feh to set the background. feh is in synaptic. once you have it, you might do something like feh --bg-scale somepicfromwhereever.jpg and you'll have wallpaper. there is a great tool for easily editing the right-click menu called obmenu - http://obmenu.sourceforge.net/index.html
finding the correct version of pyglade (or whatever it's called) is a little annoying. if you get to that point and get stuck, i think there is a thread somewhere about it.

openbox is awesome. so fast, so tweakable, no crap.

drizek
June 5th, 2006, 05:20 AM
you can use obconf to edit the rest of it too.

That said, ive tried both openbox and enlightenment 16, and e16 is cooler. Its only a little heavier than openbox, but it has a lot more features and eyecandy.

Im compiling e17 now to see how well that works.

June 5th, 2006, 07:16 AM

I have open box installed and whilst i can 'use' it i've yet to find a way to make it functional. Perhaps you could outline the steps in making a openbox desktop like that (and having everything start on login) and any FAQS/How Tos you may have used?.

i am also curious about this. i basically have the default openbox setup with the menu consisting of Terminal, Web Browser (which opens Konquerer wtf), OBconf, and the standard stuff.

so right now, if i want to run anything, i gotta upen up the terminal and run it like that.

the openbox site has a decent configuration guide, but it leaves some gaps. there is no menu.xml in my /.config/openbox directory, just the rc.xml. can i just create a menu.xml?

perhaps we should take this to another thread though, because there really isn't anything on these forums about it.

functional.= customised list. swiftfox as browser (not dillo) and not having to rouke through a menu called debian to find what i want. I'd like say to have my first five or six apps of choice easy to grab.
everything= mainly pypanel, just something so i can switch windows and stuff. Also a background. I read anout yah or yeh or something but i couldn't figure it out.

...You'll prolly call me dense.

Perhaps i'm not ready to leave the DE, although today i didn't have x for 20 mins or so but i managed to get it back, which i was pleased with myself for.

might spend some time reading that thread that was posted.

obmenu makes it possible to have the right-click menu exactly the way one wishes.

feh. it's very simple and one can set up a whole pile of favorite background choices using obmenu (see my illustration in that other thread).

...You'll prolly call me dense.

now, now, don't be so hard on yourself. (it spoils the fun for the rest of us.)

in my case, having older. modest equipment made it necessary for me to find lighter, faster alternatives. i have become quite used to openbox and will still use it on my new laptop. at first, it was about speed, but now, it's about having things the way want them.

On a side note, i've tried obmenu and i think i have to conclude openbox isn't for me. I hate having my most used programs hidden away in a menu and whilst i can put them out of the menu, so they are available at a right click that just looks plain untidy.

when adding things to obmenu, i have found myself making shapes with the length of the app names (like mt. rushmore).

kde is super fast on my new machine and i'm really enjoying it (i have about thirty icon themes and i look for just the right wallpaper to go with the theme. mrs. fuscia is going to wonder why i'm not that careful when getting dressed). the speed of my laptop has made me appreciate just how fantastic things like openbox, dillo, sylpheed-claws and the like, are. in a windows world, we're so used to technological improvments requiring bigger and more expensive equipment. programs like the above make old equipment better and still useful. i admire that.

it's not windows. You can tell by the horrible panel :D
oh, and the broken metacity theme

It amazes me, month after month there are more and more people that do not know how to post screenshots and kill us dialup users  Where are the mods around here? It's very simple to control this nonsense, see the delete button?

Cheers for all the positive comments...

The desktop icons are just ones I took off deviantart.

GTK Theme:
Darker Theme http://www.gnome-look.org/content/sh...?content=32768

Metacity:
ClearlooksWithACherryOnTop (can't seem to find it today on gnome-look)

Icons:
Kearone's icons http://art.gnome.org/themes/icon/1127

The download thing on the right is a script I wrote to manage and monitor my usenet downloads and create statistics.
I see a movie I want in easynews's web search tool, right click in firefox and send it to my download script (using a firefox extension).
That sends the link to my download server which starts downloading it, and then emails me when the download is complete and moves it into a samba share so my xbox running XBMC can see it ready to play :)

The one at the bottom is called Netspeed and the one at the top is Gnome sensors applet which uses lmsensors to get its info.

You may need to restart for them to show up in the panel properties menus.

Netspeed is referred to as network monitor...you should see two "network monitor" entries...it is the one that looks like a network card.

Gnome sensors applet is called "Hardware sensors monitor" however it does nothing by itself.LMsensors must be installed for it to work.See this tutorial:

i was lookinig at cowboy bebop pics and came across this one. i have no idea what it is or how it's connected to cowboy bebop, but that line is from a robert browning poem, pippa's song, that my grandmother read to me on the morning of my uncle larry's funeral (he was a 46 year old alcoholic who died of cancer). when my uncle paul came into the kitchen, he said "where's larry? we're going to be late."
