GIMP is the only good alternative to PS.
You can try GimpShop, it's a GUI for GIMP that tries to recreate Photoshop GUI.

Here's a link with attempts to install PS in Wine.
-Totally not important stuff: I was lucky to never install or use PS and I can say that I can use GIMP for any graphics task, and it's fantastic.
I know it's a hard transition, but you might give GIMP a try, who knows, maybe you like it :)

I doubt PhotoShop will ever work properly in Wine/Linux. I have to use it at work but use Gimp and DigiKam at home. For raw processing I use Raw Studio. These 3 programs do everything I need..

Keep the Win partition for Photoshop or use Gimp. Simple.
I have a Win partition for pro-audio stuff like Pro-tools, Reason, Cubase, etc., and particularly use notation software Sibelius which, in my opinion (and in fact), is not matched in Linux/Ubuntu (yes, it runs in Wine but not interested).
Another option is to kill Windows, install Ubuntu, then install Windows as a virtual machine inside Ubuntu. Then you can use Photoshop in Windows running in Ubuntu, if that makes sense!
Welcome and good luck with it ... ;)

Dual boot is a must for me as now and then I do need something that Linux is not the best at doing. :)

IF Photoshop is all you need of Win then you might not even need a dual boot. Photoshop can be made to work in Ubuntu (cs5) without a problem.

photoshop cs5 runs fine under wine. rated gold at winehq.org (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=20158).

I use two raw processing programs. One is UFRaw for the GIMP. But I do miss ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) It had all kinds of adjustments that can't be done in my present programs under Ubuntu. How does Raw Studio compare to ACR?

I've never used ACR since we do not do raw files at work but Raw Studio has all of the features I need such as color correction, batch, sharpening, channel mixer, curves, histogram, etc. You can also do tethered shooting as well as tagging.

Maybe run windows in vmware player? That would let you Photshop and it will let you literally drag and drop files between linux and windows.

makes perfect sense, been doing just this for over a year now, no hiccups.
granted, there's a slight learning curve with the whole virtual machine thing (i settled on virtualbox), but once your up and runing, it's sweet!
