View Full Version : Looking to form a Texas LoCo team

cajunaggie
May 31st, 2006, 04:19 AM
Hey there fellow Texans (or "Howdy" if y'all want to be formal),
I was browsing throug the LoCo Team List wiki and found three proposed Texas teams in Houston, Austin, and Dallas, respectively. Unfortunately nobody has a forum or a mailing list. Or anything more than a two-sentence wiki for that matter. They appear to be effectively kaput.

I know certain areas of the Lone Start State aren't the most computer-friendly places you'll ever see ;) but I think a LoCo team might help, at least in some small way. If nothing else, a Texas LoCo team will give Texas some prescence (did I spell that right?) in the Ubuntu community.

My technical skills are limited, so I'm not much use in that respect. But I am rather good with organizing and finding things. I'd be willing to serve in that capacity.

Thoughts? Comments? Volunteers to be our fearless leader(s)?

While slightly amusing, that was neither neccesary nor helpful. Have anything relevant to the thread subject you'd like to say?

At least you're willing to join the team. And age isn't neccesarily a disqualifier. I'm barely 20 myself.

I wondered why there wasn't a Texas Loco team, especially in Austin where Dell is located just slightly north of here, AMD is here, and Austin for the most part is pretty tech savvy.

There are two other people in my workplace that have started using Ubuntu on their home computers which completely floored me when I found out :)

I'd join one, but I don't really have the knowhow to start one up, or keep it organized, plan events, etc...

It's huge. I can drive from Austin, which is more or less central Texas, to the Oklahoma border which is north, and it takes roughly 8 hours. Takes about 6-7 hours to drive south to Corpus Christi and the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas is a country unto itself, seriously....

Now that's just too funny :)

If you guys are interested and serious about starting up a LoCo team, but not sure where to do it, a great place to start is by getting some advice from leaders of already established LoCo teams (such as Utah) and maybe contacting a member of the US LoCo Team (vorian may help you).

Also, try chatting with each other outside of forums, and maybe set up a meeting online in IRC or AIM or whatever your preference.

I'm a 33-year old long-time Linux "follower" and *buntu convert. Unfortunately, I'm 6 hours from Dallas and farther from Houston. I'm keeping an eye on the Texas Panhandle from Amarillo.

If anything happens or gets organized, add me to the list. If there are others in Amarillo who are interested in forming something, keep me posted.

All right guys, let's get this thing started. I am sick of there not being a TX loco team. I don't have too much free time, but I will try and find out how the others got started and became official. I would appreciate any others to do the same. Thanks.

Except Russia isn't in Europe, It's not in the EU, it's not in Eastern Europe, it's not in Western Europe.

Although England prides it's self on being able to cram 60 million people into an area the size of half of California.

Texas needs a LoCo!

I have been using Ubuntu since the autumn of 2006 (Dapper). I'm now using Hardy Heron on my AMD64 home box and on my HP Compaq nx6110 laptop at work (32-bit). With the exception of a bug that is preventing my from syncing my digital music player in Amarok, Hardy has been great.

I'm a teacher and a curriculum and technology coordinator at a school for troubled kids in the mountains of far West Texas. I still consider myself a linux noob, but I'm getting pretty geeky with it. I'd love to contribute in anyway I can to getting a Texas LoCo going.

And to the starter of this thread, I grew up in San Antonio (Clark HS, 85, St. Mary's 89). Go Spurs Go!

Ummmm... no, you didn't spell presence correctly, but that's to be expected from someone with two strikes (at least) against them. Being both a Cajun and an Aggie, it's amazing that you can even type.

Strikes are warnings from moderators, they mean nothing on how well a person can type :).

I live in San Antonio and have been using Ubuntu for almost 2 years now. Count me in for a LoCo team.

It seems like people have been talking about this for while without any progress, which is a little disappointing. Since switching myself, I've helped a couple of my coworkers who were interested switch also. On the whole, we may not be the most techie state but there's definitely potential here.

It seems to me that an Ubuntu LoCo is a bit too specific and a more general LUG is the way to go. I'm sure this is discussed elsewhere. Maybe in larger metropolitan areas LoCos could thrive, but we have a hard enough time with just a general LUG here in Amarillo (http://www.amarillolinux.com).

Well, yeah, I can understand the problem in Amarillo, and also including everywhere between there and Lubbock. That far back in the sticks, and back in the mists of time, there probably aren't a lot of computer literate people.

I grew up in that area, and it's not an oasis of knowledge.

I'm near Austin and from what I've seen the Austin & Dallas folks have a good web presence but the meetings aren't coming together well which I really don't think is that big of a deal , I mean we will all be down when there's a good reason to come together right?

Im in Corpus Christi. Other than my father (also an engineer) I don't know of ANYONE in my area even comfortable with the idea of a linux computer, much less heard of Ubuntu. I switch lives between home here in CC and in San Antonio. So what does it take to kick off Team Texas? And how fast can we get to the top? (its in our Texan nature to whip atleast 45 of the other states).
I myself am a new user but I am coming along fine.

I'm 19 and an Economics student at UT Dallas.

I'd be very interested in forming a team, and would be willing to volunteer/help with the creation of one. I'm not amazing at anything, but am decent at most things computer related (Gimp, Html, Php) and can usually figure things out if left to my own devices for long enough.

Hey Texas folks!

The Texas Team needs to be unified a bit, but the current leaders of the regional/city teams don't really have the time to do more administrative tasks.

Can I get some volunteers in Texas to help me get https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TexasTeam into shape? Mostly it's wiki editing, linking to existing teams and in general making everything more accessible.

(Note: I'm not actually in Texas, I'm just part of the USTeams (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/USTeams) project trying to help out the team)

Awesome! Pretty much we want to take:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TexasTeam

And add links for:

Mailing list: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-tx
Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/~texasteam
Forums: http://texas.ubuntuforums.org - wait, no one ever created a forum at this address! Forums are great for getting new people involved since the barrier to entry is very low. Let me know if you want a forum, most LoCo teams have one, I'll put you in touch with the forums folks so you can join all the other states: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=183
Regional teams: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DallasTeam, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustinTeam, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SanAntonioTeam, are there more?

And do some general sprucing up of the page. The owner of texas-ubuntu.org has said he'd transfer the domain to someone who wants to maintain a site there, but it's too early for that and I think going with removing all mentions of the site (except to say perhaps that Loye Young owns it and it's registered for future reference) is the way to go.

I'm making updates to the wiki.

Which mailing list is generally used? we have the launchpad team one, and the ubuntu one at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-tx .

IMO the ubuntu one is more official and the name matches the irc channel, so I'm going to use that.

I think one of the problems is that people don't really know about it. Linking all the regional teams would be very helpful.

I agree that the lists.ubuntu.com list is the proper one to link to, I'll talk to the owner of the LP team about the possibility of dissolving the launchpad list entirely so people know which one to join.

Related, I just checked on freenode:

channelname, # of people
#ubuntu-us-tx, 4
#ubuntu-austin, 2
#ubuntu-houston, 1
#ubuntu-dallas, 5

I think it would make *a lot* of sense to bring everyone into #ubuntu-us-tx like other states do, rather than having all these tiny regional channels.

/me lurks in #ubuntu-us-tx

LoCos are an awesome way to get involved! Welcome :)

Age is no barrier to participating in Loco Teams and Ubuntu. Many meeting and event locations are chosen to be friendly to all ages. If you happen to be in Dallas the week of Nov. 16 - 20, UDS is a great way to get a feel for the project and see how the releases are developed. We are trying to coordinate a planning meeting during that week, please subscribe this blueprint if you want to be notified of the location and time:

https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/texasteam/+spec/texas-loco-team-organization

and this bug also some more info on the effort.

https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/texasteam/+bug/475646

If anyone wants to step up and help lead the organizational efforts that would be awesome! What's needed is someone with time and organizational skills - age is not a factor but the team needs to be able to count on you to answer emails, update wikis, lead IRC sessions and be admin on the various Team resources.

Thanks!
