I have a dv7-6143cl and it has switchable graphics(2 graphics cards one for performance other for powersaving) and I all i want to do is use the ati(high performance) card in Ubuntu.I cant seem to figure this out at all =/ i know that the ati center in linux cant do anything( hell it wont even work atm) I ve been looking into something called vgaswitcheroo but I can't seem to find out how to get it to work. So yea i am ether looking for a way to switch from the intel card to the ati card but i will be perfectly happy with just using the ati card on its on if i have to and thanks to whomever helps.

Update to the latest BIOS. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-96635-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=4063&product=5118765&sw_lang=
This adds support for "fixed mode" where only the ATI card is used.

Well the transformers can help! ;)

I also had problems with my optimus cards.
(MSI X460DX)
and solved it with bumblebee,
And went from 60Fps to 600Fps in glxgears!

There is also a program called ironhide, that switches the extra card on and off.
(so you have a way better battery use!)
I didn't try that one yet.

Google for bumblebee and ironhide.

it will probably solve your problem!
