I have a Lenovo laptop (R500) and due to what I'd call a manufacturing issue, I managed to break 2 of my 3 USB ports. I'm down to the last one and am looking for alternatives of how to connect my USB devices. I don't want to use a USB hub, since the last port will probably break, too, before too long.

I can't get any USB card bus (PCMCIA) card to work (and it seems nobody else can either)...

Firewire to USB adapters do exist, but *converters* seem not to...

Any other ideas anyone?

Unfortunately, I think you have no choice but to use a usb hub.

Hmmm... but I'd need a USB port for that.

Has nobody heard of a USB card working with ubuntu 11.04? I saw a thread in which downgrading to 8.? (coming all the way from 10.04) worked for them...

you have a USB port dont you ? IF you think it is likely to break, then i would be more inclined to take your machine back or buy a new one, there is something inherently wrong if 2 of the 3 have broke and you think the other one is likely too aswell.

Go for a powered HUB.
