View Full Version : [SOLVED] 10.04 unable to set resolutions on non-EDID monitor

I would be grateful for any help ..........

I did a clean install of 10.04.03 from an alternate cd last week. It works fine but I have been trying to get the monitor to work at higher resolution - 1024x768.

The computer is old - the driver card is nVidia ( but I have not installed the recommended driver ); the monitor is an old Proview CY565 which I suspect does not have EDID.

I have listed my efforts below ....

1 I printed out the display/driver configurations as suggested by MAFoLLfen....

5 I have tried stopping X and generating an xorg.config using CTRL-ALT-F1

sudo service gdm stop
sudo X -configure

At which point there is a screen full of text ending in "number of created screens does not match the number of detected devices; configuration failed.

I gather that 10.04 has "Kernel Mode Setting" - Suspending/Modifying this sounds frightening so I was hoping to permanently fix some xrandr commands in the start configuration but ...............

Any help greatly welcomed bearing in mind I am not too techy

Try a basic xorg.conf with monitor data added:

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

paste in:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
HorizSync 31-60
VertRefresh 56-76

Hi realzippy --- thanks for the interest .... as I said I am not that techy but have crafted an xorg based on your reply and one which worked with the monitor on 8.04. As I said, i am not that techy ( although my techiness has grown significantly in the last two weeks )

I would be grateful if you could cast your eyes over the following for any obvious errors ....

What is the best way of trying it and the consequence if it doesn't work - I could delete the file but would I be able to get into the terminal to do this ?

Many thanks

Here's some EDID Instructions I wrote in my graphics sticky in Post #275 (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10907238&postcount=275).

Look where your Mode declarations are in the Monitor Section above? What are highlighted is your "mode names." These are just ID or variable names and must be matched in spelling and case when you reference them... Keep this in mind.

Now look in the Monitor Section above and use the color coding to reference the respective modes. You have an "@" character for each instead of "_". What those characters should be to correct this is a space character... When I do it, I use a space (" ") there, so it matches up and is consistent with mode names that would be generated by a box that is connected to a monitor that stores EDID data. Look at this example:

Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "layout1"
Screen "screen1"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "nVidia Corporation"
BoardName "NVIDIA GeForce 6100 and later"

Option "DPMS" "false"
Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"

After you sent your info... You do know that the Xorg NV driver supports your card, right? And since Ubuntu version 11.04, the Ubuntu Additional Drivers > Nouveau Experiment 3D driver for Nvidia is one of the best drivers I've tested for the older Legacy NVidia Cards!!! You have other options...

Note - I had "finger trouble" in creating the xorg.conf file and didn't notice that I had typed gksudo gedit /etc/X11.xorg.conf and created it in there. I corrected my mistake by deleting the contents of this folder but it would not allow me to delete the file completely.

Any advice gratefully received !!!!!!!

Forgot to mention in above post

System>Preferences>Monitor>Resolutions only shows the two lower resolutions but not the 1024x768.

I also tried Modes line in the xorg.conf with just the resolution excluding the "60.0" frequency.

1.The nouveau driver does not support modelines (afaik)
2.You seem to have disabled KMS.Did you edit "nomodeset" somewhere ?

Hi Realzippy

1 The nouveau driver does not support modelines (afaik) ----- what is the significance ??? If it doesn't should I replace "nouveau" by "default" in the "device" section of the xorg.conf ?
2 I specified NOMODESET to run the alternate CD when loading the system. I haven't edited it (as far as I know !).

Thanks

Hi jdneate,
the nouveau driver should be best choice for your card.
We could go on with that....but:
...as MAFoElffen suggested:
...since Ubuntu version 11.04, the Ubuntu Additional Drivers > Nouveau Experimental 3D driver...
might be worth a test.
(afaik it is nouveau/gallium)
Is that "experimental driver" offered in your system?
Can you check this out 1rst?

Hi realzippy
I had a quick play before i got your reply. I replaced "nouveau" by "default" in the driver section.

Error message on start up different ..

EE failed to load module "default" (module does not exist,0)

I will replace "default" by "experimental" and try again.
EE no drivers available.

Wait,
can't you have (please!!) a look at "additional drivers" before
you continue to edit xorg.conf randomly?
(which makes no sense...)

Tried "experimental driver" and " experimental" in the xorg.conf but driver not recognised message on restart.

Just picked up this message .... apologies for my lack of knowledge but how do I find whether I have the "additional drivers" ?? Thanks for your guidance

When installing the experimental driver via "additional drivers" you
should need no xorg.conf.
I do not know if a xorg.conf will "disturb" the experimental driver.
So can you please do the following (and anything else)? :

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
Then uninstall the experimental driver via additional drivers
(if you have not already).
Then reboot.
After reboot,post output from

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Please try nothing until I have answered then.

Hi Realzippy

Apologies --- but what do you mean by this

"Then uninstall the experimental driver via additional drivers
(if you have not already)."

Thanks

I thought you already had tried the experimental driver offered in additional driver.

Ok,let's start again (from the beginning) step-by-step:

Open a terminal,run:

jockey-gtk

What happens?

Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-33-generic root=UUID=f5596863-aaea-4446-b6db-40e3bc0947ab ro nomodeset quiet splash

"nomodeset" is still your boot option.
We have to change that before going on with nouveau or experimental.
Problem is,if we delete "nomodeset",and your machine does not boot anymore due to this, you have a problem.
Do you know how to boot your machine with "nomodeset" as boot option ?

jdneate
September 25th, 2011, 03:28 PM
No - I would prefer not to have to reload the system ......

realzippy
September 25th, 2011, 03:42 PM
With "reload" you mean fresh install?
No,I don't want you to have to do this, that is why I asked if you know how to boot manually with "nomodeset" if we have deleted "nomodeset" from grub
and your system has problems to boot.
Suggest you reboot your machine, and try the following as a practise.

press "shift" when booting to get to grub menue.
Highlight the line
Ubuntu,with linux 2.6.32-33-generic .....
press "e"
after "..quiet splash" type a "space" and "nomodeset" so it looks like:
...quiet splash nomodeset
then hit
ctrl + x

If you understood this procedure, you know how to add "nomodeset" manually for just 1 boot
if something goes wrong when we delete "nomodeset" from grub.

jdneate
September 25th, 2011, 04:07 PM
Realzippy Yes - I meant re-install.

I can get into the GRUB loader and can see how to edit the config file. I notice that the existing line has

ro space nomodeset space space quiet space splash new line.

Does the order matter or the double space have any significance ?

What do you suggest now ?

realzippy
September 25th, 2011, 04:14 PM
Honestly I do not know if a "double space" matters;I guess.
Normally it should be:

/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-33-generic root=UUID=f5596863-aaea-4446-b6db-40e3bc0947ab ro nomodeset quiet splash

...where I do not see a double space.
Try again.
Then delete the nomodeset,so it looks like

/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-33-generic root=UUID=f5596863-aaea-4446-b6db-40e3bc0947ab ro quiet splash

Then press
ctrl+x
to boot.
If it boots,we know that we can delete "nomodeset" from grub.

jdneate
September 25th, 2011, 04:18 PM
Ok - here goes. If the system is blamk - I will put the nomodeset back in the grub line

realzippy
September 25th, 2011, 04:21 PM
It is only for 1 boot, temporarily.
No need to add it again,it will be there again.

jdneate
September 25th, 2011, 04:27 PM
Realzippy .... yes did that.

I ended up with the purple screen with "Ubuntu" in the middle ( it looked like a higher resolution than normal). The 5 dots underneath were all red.

There was no music / drum roll or cursor.

realzippy
September 25th, 2011, 04:34 PM
Ok.
Now we try this:

Backup your existing xorg.conf:

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
edit: ignore it if there is none.

Then:

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Paste into empty file:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "nouveau"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
HorizSync 31-60
VertRefresh 56-76
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Nothing else please.
Then close file saving changes.
Then reboot again without "nomodeset" ...

jdneate

Realzippy

Went a lot further this time before freezing......

Got purple screen - definitely at higher resolution. Got to login screen showing the computer's name but no login options/names displayed. There was drum roll and a cursor - which did not respond to the mouse. The bottom of the screen displayed the day of week and time.

I notice that the Vertrefresh specified (56-76) was outside the range of the monitor (60-75) ?

realzippy
September 25th, 2011, 05:10 PM
56 or 60,this should not matter.
Now you know how to edit xorg.conf : ;)

gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

change the 56/76 to 60/75,boot without nomodeset.
Guess there is no difference...
...when you are at the frozen login, can you drop to tty ?
Simply press Alt+ctrl+F2....if tty2 opens,log in with username+password,
then type

startx
remember or write down errors (or important part of it)...

jdneate
September 25th, 2011, 05:29 PM
Realzippy

edited vertrefresh to 60-75 and did reboot without nomodeset.

Got login screen with login options this time; selected administrator and screen froze. Purple screen showing cursor which would not respond to mouse.

No response to ctrl+alt+F2. Frozen.

realzippy
September 25th, 2011, 05:40 PM
Ok,now you try
not only deleting
"nomodeset"
when booting,but also adding
"fbcon=map:1"

....simply replace nomodeset with fbcon=map:1

.................................................. ..................
Btw,as you might have guessed,I do not know the resolution for your problem.
I just try to make you do what I would if I where in front of your machine.
There are 2,3 ideas left to try.
Although if we can't make it work today,we have more information, and
I can think things over/search for that nouveau problem.
I hope you don't get tired and that it is not too frustrating for you.

jdneate
September 25th, 2011, 06:00 PM
Realzippy

I left xorg.conf unchanged.

This time did not get as far when nomdeset replaced by fbcon=map:1.

I got plain purple screen with ubuntu in centre with 5 red dots beneath; there was no cursor and the system did not respond to CTL+ALT+F1

Yes getting a bit tired but very grateful for your help. Also learned a lot about the controls for the system and pleased to see how robust it is.

realzippy
September 25th, 2011, 06:06 PM
Ok,have no idea about the nouveau problem in the moment.I will investigate.
Now....
...we try the VESA driver instead.

Simply edit xorg.conf, change in Section Device
"nouveau"
to
"vesa"

Try to boot with and without nomodeset.

jdneate
September 25th, 2011, 06:19 PM
Well - I replaced "nouveau" by "vesa" in xorg.conf and rebooted with NOMODESET still in the Grub line.

It seems to have worked.

System>Prefernces>monitors>Resolution shows 5 resolutions 320x400,640x400,640x480,800x600, and 1024x768.

I have selected 1024x768.

I will remove NOMODESET from the GRUB line next and let you know the outcome.

jdneate
September 25th, 2011, 06:32 PM
With "vesa" in xorg.conf and NOMODESET deleted from the GRUB line Ubuntu starts up with an error

EE Vesa Kernel mode setting driver in use; refusing to load
EE No devices selected

On starting the system and selecting System.Preferences>monitors resolutions shows one resolution option 1024x768 and one refresh rate 0.

The display runs in high resolution.

Could you have found the answer ???

realzippy
September 25th, 2011, 06:40 PM
Ok,
so you can keep the "nomodeset" boot option and get 1024x768,
which is correct for your Proview CY565...?
Means, the resolution problem is solved ?
Still don't know why nouveau does not work.

MAFoElffen
September 25th, 2011, 06:43 PM
1.The nouveau driver does not support modelines (afaik)
2.You seem to have disabled KMS.Did you edit "nomodeset" somewhere ?
Well(?) It should / meaning it's supposed to... Except that there is an open bug with Nouveau, Lucid and modelines on that issue at the moment:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/538275

If you changed the Section "Device" > Driver "nouveau" to Section "Device" > Driver "vesa"... The VESA driver does support modelines in Lucid...

Does

Also as a note, temporarily delete "queit splash" from your your bootline. Some systems have a bug with the "splash" switch.

As for the Experimental 3D Driver... It's available for Meerkat, Natty and Onieric. They got it working while we were testing Natty, so I've tested it both Natty and Onieric. I honestly haven't tested it in 10.10, but it is in it's repo's.

Well(?) It should / meaning it's supposed to... Except that there is an open bug with Nouveau, Lucid and modelines on that issue at the moment:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/538275
Ok,thanks.
I did not know (that's why I wrote afaik).
Nouveau, modeline in xorg.conf has never worked for me, so I thought it might be a "feature" ;-) ...
...strange thing that xrandr&modeline&nouveau works,btw.

If you changed the Section "Device" > Driver "nouveau" to Section "Device" > Driver "vesa"... The VESA driver does support modelines in Lucid...
..as I understood OP now (vesa) has 1024x768,so obsolete...

Also as a note, temporarily delete "quiet splash" from your your bootline. Some systems have a bug with the "splash" switch.

You mean jdneate should try without nomodeset, quiet splash and with
xorg.conf/nouveau ?

Firstly - thanks very much to both of you for all your patience and to realzippy for your persistance today. As I said, I have learned a little about the system and gained confidence that once it is up and running it is robust.

I had a look at the hwinfo information ...

hwinfo --framebuffer didn't produce a meaningful output; it overwrote itself on one display line.

I have spent 6 hrs sat at this terminal today and am a bit tired; I will leave the "quiet splash" issue for the time being.

I hope to play with the system tomorrow and if OK will close the thread tomorrow. If you want any more tests carried out then let me know overnight and I will look at them tomorrow. I am now signing off for today...

Again .....thanks

According to the results of your monitor from xrandr (1024x768 76.0*), try using:

Modeline "1024x768 76.00" 83.00 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769 772 803 -hsync +vsync

as your "add modeline" in your xorg.conf.

You are welcome.
If you are satisfied with the vesa driver @1024x768,then
set thread as solved.
If you enjoy further testing ,try
MAFoElffen's boot option.Note that he also mentioned that
if you upgraded to 10.10 the experimental driver would be available.
....there is another boot option you could try for nouveau:
video=DVI-I-1:1024x768@60
.. check kernel log if output is "DVI-I-1" or different..

...but he already runs this mode successfully as xrandr shows (*).
So why this modeline?
Confused,but sorry,it is late here...

Edit:
You mean this modeline and nouveau instead of vesa I guess.
What about the bug?

@realzippy

It is late and doesn't matter now... I had thought I had remembered him previously mentioning something about 1024x768... but that might have been when he was trying the nouveau driver. By what xrandr returned (which is monitor data, not driver nor GPU data) what was there didn't match what was in his xorg.conf... Even though what was there was a valid VESA mode and should work. That xrandr said that it his monitor default.

I could be remembering wrong. I usually help about 10 graphics threads each at a time on various distro's and at Xorg. I try to keep users and threads straight in my head...

Only other at this point is mentioning the xorg "nv" driver which works with his GPU in his version of Ubuntu... It works, but only in 2D mode without hardware acceleration. That's why I prefer, the experimental driver.

The Nouveau driver doesn't work for him at this moment. The VESA driver will work for him with modelines and is basic. The NV driver will work with modelines and the quality is a little better than VESA, but not much. The Experimental 3D will work with modelines, but he would have to do a distribution upgrade to at least 10.10.

Hi Since last message --- the system half froze after loading Google Earth; I had Application drop down menu selected. CTRL- ALT - F1 responded and I could enter search data into Google menu and display results! none of the ubuntu buttons responded. But that was last night.
The system has run fine since then without problem - i have now loaded my backed up data ( photos, docs etc). The system looks and responds well; it will do all that I require of it.

I can not comment on the driver issue - I do not understand the syntax of the .conf system and the drivers.

I am quite happy with the presnt load; but I did notice that the pictures were very slow on Google Earth and can be distorted . ( I don't normally use this so it isn't a problem). From what I can gather I am using vesa driver software with old NVIDIA hardware. The system>harware drivers recommends v96 NVIDIA driver - would Google Earth performance improve if I used this ?
I will wait for another day for any reply and then close this thread as solved.... Many thanks

Look at the last part of my last post. Google Earth would do better with the NVidia driver, because then it would use the onboard memory and functions... but would still be 2D without hardware accelrlation.

If you upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, then you could use the Experimental 3D Driver which adds hardware acceleration... If you did go this way, I would backup your xorg.conf beforehand. This option would get you as fast and capable as you could get with the hardware "you" have. Anything better would require you to change/upgrade your GPU card to something more capable.

....that is what I was asking when I wanted you to run
jockey-gtk which you ignored twice in this thread.
Jockey = additional drivers = hardware drivers ....

So,yes, the 96 driver should give you the best performance afaik.

I think I got out of step when "jockey-gtk" came up.

What does it do ?

I have a system which does what I want it to do -- so reluctant to try in case I lose it

+1 Yes or go through the Menus:
System > Administration > Hardware Drivers

REMEMBER to make a copy of your xorg.conf to somewhere safe "before" you do that... you'll still need to readd your modeline changes to the new xorg.conf... It will get overwritten in the install.

Right - I loaded the NVIDIA v96 driver via Administration>Hardware Drivers as part of the experimentation; I'm sure that the system did not run after restart.

Not knowing very much about Ubuntu/Linux .... Would the v96 driver generate it's own xorg.conf file and modify the GRUB loader to remove/add NOMODESET when it is installed ?

Having got an acceptable system I am reluctant to modify it unless I can understand what the implications are and how to get back to the working system should it not work !

Yes it will. During the install it will generate a new xorg.conf (ergo the need to backup your old one.) If it doesn't run

sudo nvidia-xconfig
***It may find the montitor modes or not- what your original assumption of the Monitor not storing the EDID data may have been correct (which we all assume was right). If so. it will fail until you add the modelines and changes from the old xorg.conf to the new one that was generated... Thats one of the reasons I asked you to backup the old one... You can cut and paste the changes in. Without those modelines and other changes, it will try "nvidia-auto-select +0+0" to probe the monitor for suitable modes from the EDID in the monitor // which doesn't work for your's, because there is not stored EDID data to use for that to work...

The other reason I had you backup the old one, was that if you don't like the new driver, you can overwrite the new xorg.conf with the backup xorg.conf and you will be right back to where you were... What tells X-Windows what driver to use and what settings to use for that driver... is the xorg.conf file.

If there is no xorg.conf file then Xorg goes into an "auto" mode, where it probes hardware, tries to find a suitable driver and uses default settings for it. It accepts other input from KMS to try to help with that. This doesn't always work and surely didn't for you in all resolutions.

*** By the by-- once that driver is installed and working, there is a way to confirm if your monitor has EDID data stored or not. In the nvidia-settings applet, there is an option to retrieve the EDID data of a monitor and an option you can use in the xorg.conf file to use an external custom edid file. If there was EDID data stored, then that file would contain hex data. If that file did come back as good, then you could use that data to use the full capabilities of that monitor... When that happens like that, sometimes (rarely) there was a problem in how it tried retrieving the data. When monitors and TV's first started storing that data, it wasn't universal and standardized.

If that file comes back as blank or 0 bytes, then it confirms that there was no stored data.

*** Installing the driver does not change any of the grub files.

Thanks for the explanation .....

I have activated the NVIDIA v96 driver ( system>admin>drivers). It seems to work and the display is faster when there are a lot of graphics.

The xorg.conf file is

spe@jdneate:~$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
HorizSync 31-60
VertRefresh 60-75
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

System>admin>preferences>monitors now gives the option to use either the Gnome or NVIDIA tools to display monitor detail. The Gnome tool shows 11 resolution options to 1024x768. The NVIDIA option shows a lot more detail and a lot of options around Xorg; the driver is on auto resolution detection and has chosen 1024x768. The resolution options include some above the capability of the monitor.

Only a partial happy ending - I have a robust working system which does all that I want.
Unfortunately I found that the NVIDIA v96 driver was not behaving; twice within 24hrs the system hung with a blank screen when changing users/shutting down. Also when typing commands using terminal, characters were often displayed as spaces. However, when the cursor was returned to the space the required character was displayed. I don't know if it is hardware; but in the end I deactivated v96 and went back to the VESA driver. The system works fine for what I use it !

Again thanks for your help.
