I am trying to install Ubuntu (ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso) on oracle vm box.

I have tried 3 times, each time unchecking the box to install updates, and unchecking install mp3 ware, but whatever I do, ubuntu keeps downloading and downloading and downloading. Since the iso I have is the latest, and I am on a slow internet connection I do not want to download upgrades.

Also the upgrade files keep expanding. 1st it is downloading 9 of 30, then 12 of 60 , then 15 of 90 etc etc.

Hi, welcome to the fora.

You should be happy for the download. 11.04 has received a lot of important bug fixes since release.

Why not 10.04 LTS, the latest long-term support release? As it's been out awhile there shouldn't be too many downloads/updates as mostly fixed in 10.04.03 (it has been through plenty of fixing already). If you are new to Ubuntu this would probably be a better place to start anyhow. ;)

Welcome and good luck.

Try disconnecting host from internet before booting/installing.
Also, if you boot into the LiveCD, do not configure its network.
This will stall any attempt of installer to access or update network repositories and use CD only.

+1. Yes, don't give it a chance.
