I'm building a mythtv server that needs to record. Also it needs to stream tv and the recordings to a laptop our other desktops.

What do i need minimal?

I have a hauppage pvr-500mce does it work stable?
What kind of distro is the best to do it?

Got a P2-450 with 256mb that isn't doing anything atm, is it enough for it?

Check out knoppmyth (also Debian based) for a pain free mythtv install if that is all the machine will be doing. The 450 will probibly be ok for your backend server (recording and streaming to your frontends) as long as you don't want to use it for playback or high def. It is a little slow for simultanious playback and record. I believe the PVR-500 is supported out of the box with knoppmyth too, I know for fact that my PVR-150 and PVR-250 are. The Knoppmyth forums will be able to give you some good reference points regarding your hardware.
