I'm trying to run 3 screens by using both an Nvidia gt430 and Geforce 8400GS, two off the former, one off the latter. I am running into the difficulty that when I have both cards in (GT430 @ 3:0:0, 8400 @ 5:0:0) I just get this:

[ 21.426] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-1): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU at PCI:5:0:0. Please
[ 21.426] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-1): check your system's kernel log for additional error
[ 21.426] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-1): messages and refer to Chapter 8: Common Problems in the
[ 21.426] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-1): README for additional information.
[ 21.426] (EE) NVIDIA(GPU-1): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!

even if my xorg.conf doesn't contain any reference to using a card at 5:0:0 like so:

# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildd@palmer) Fri Apr 9 10:35:18 UTC 2010

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig

Am I correct in suspecting that this is caused by xorg trying to initialize the 8400GS as a GT430? It gives the same error if I insert sections into the xorg.conf configuring the 5:0:0 device as a 8400GS

Is there a way around this?

Thanks,
Mike

After some more fiddling, I've got it working. It turns out the problem was actually to do with the way the kernel is allocated virtual memory; it was fixed by adding the vmalloc=256MB to the grub boot options
