This is a classic problem for 11.04, and I have not heard of any easy solution. I think the best option is to stay with 10.10.

One of my computers has an FX 5200 card, and it will run 10.10 for as long as it is supported.

Often it is best to wait a few month after release before installing. 10.10 is supported until april 2012, so there is no need to rush.
